Whatever happened to the jolly notion of keel hauling? An appropriate punishment I would have thought.

During my time at a CHQ, there were some serious questions asked about the use of a 2*'s car that involved taking his pet dogs to kennels in the south-west of England. Questions were also asked about Mrs 2*'s flights on service aircraft with hubby when he wasn't doing a formal inspection. I believe that there were refunds as a result.

When the NAO conducted an audit of the MT fleet at this particular CHQ, they noted that certain vehicles (Vauxhall Omega's) were exclusively allocated to named VSOs. The NAO's view was that these vehicles were part of the general station fleet and should be available to any person/section that needed them to carry out their duties. The NAO emphasised the fact that if they were permanently allocated to named individuals, then those individuals should be taxed accordingly. The vehicles were very sharply pulled back into the general pool but, surprise surprise, always seemed to be allocated to their original users. Even the 1*s were twitching at the prospect of being taxed for the use of "their" Cavaliers. 4ma did enquire if that meant he could use the CinC's very nice maroon Omega with the gold go-faster stripe and special radio but was told I would have to make use of a clapped-out Skoda instead.

The Wing Cars were also monopolised by the Wg Cdrs, and it was with considerable pleasure that even then, we regularly informed them that they couldn't use "their" Austin Metro's to go back to their quarter at lunchtime. To be honest I have been involved in a lot of MT management, and I can see both sides of the story. The Aircrew would complain about our inflexibility regarding vehicle use on Det etc, but should we afford them some latitude, they would simply fack the thing up and walk away from the problem as it's "just a car".
