Reports Of 'Unacceptable' Plans To Merge Paras And Marines

Cost-cutting plans to merge Parachute Regiment units and Royal Marines units are said to have "horrified" the defence secretary, according to newspaper claims.

The Times said one tabled cost-saving option was a combined force comprising 3 Commando Brigade, predominately made up of Royal Marines, and 16 Air Assault Brigade, which includes the 2nd and 3rd battalions of the Parachute Regiment.

The paper also reports there are plans to cut the armed forces' strength by more than 14,000, reducing army numbers the smallest since before Napoleon - fewer than 71,000.

One proposal would see a loss of: 11,000 soldiers; 2,000 Royal Marines and sailors; and, 1,250 airmen, the newspaper reported.

This is what I have seen. Some one doesn’t like pumas. Must be an ex chinny in the loop somewhere. Option 4 was clear disband everything.

    Option 5:

Cancel HS2, money goes to the Armed Forces.

Shut down the House of Lords, money goes to the Armed Forces.

    Job done.

Airfix ones obviously. On my pension they couldn't afford a propeller!

  7. So all 3 options involve personnel cuts - great, more fear and uncertainty.

Coupled with the recommendation of the last round of redundancies of moving to the standard redundancy package of 1 week per year worked, which no doubt the bean counters would love to implement - get rid of people and on the cheap too!

Do any of the options include the complete withdrawal of HM forces from anything ceremonial-related?

Marching around in bearskin hats is all well and good, but it doesn't win wars.

If you've already passed your 22 then the most you can receive in redundancy is 3 months gross pay!

  10. Even better!! Time to start raiding the stationary cupboard for pens and collecting socks from stores.
