    RAF draws down Tornado training

The Royal Air Force is drawing down its training on the Panavia Tornado GR4 strike aircraft, with the service's training unit, XV(R) Squadron, beginning its last course in January.

After completion of the final course, XV(R) Squadron will disband on 31 March; ahead of the retirement of the Tornado in early 2019.

If the end of service date remains as planned then it makes sense to turn the training tap off at some point. The error would be to turn the tap off and then following another strategic "rethink" keep the Tonka going for even longer.

The short answer is they can't. Tornado is on its arse.
Good food, good accomodation and good pay are the 3 pillars for keeping people happy in the RAF (WO Catering, Inside Brize Norton, Thursday 19th Dec 2013) roll on the day that ever happens.........

    That's been said twice before

Always read the small print. It usually starts "Your attestation date is....."

  7. I'm struggling to see why the tonka is being retired - F35 not ready, Typhoon barely capable??

I know it struggled with serviceability on the early days but thought they were good nowadays, is it hours / FI related or has reliability dropped?

    Anyone care to share??

    thanks

  8. I am guessing the tail has a lot to do with it....by which I mean a withering of technical support, manning, supply chain, through life costs etc

It just needs the Stormshadow & Brimstone tick in the box (being given as we speak) and there's no need for Tornado AFAIA.

It is a good rule in life never to apologise. The right sort of people do not want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them.
