Negotiations start on future of RAF Halton

Negotiations on the future of the RAF Halton site are underway, according to a councillor.

District council cabinet member for economic development delivery, Steve Bowles, said work was taking place to try to come up with ‘sustainable development’ for the site.

The base will be closed by the end of 2022 after the Ministry of Defence announced plans last year to reduce its running costs by £140 million over ten years.

The news of the closure of the entire base followed an earlier announcement by the MoD that the Volunteer Gliding Centre would be shut as part of its Better Estate Strategy.

Cllr Bowles said: “All the stakeholders and key parties are currently working to deliver something that suits the community’s needs.

Was there not a clause from the Rothschild family about returning it to it's original state if miltary use stopped on the site (or was that just a rumour).
Retired and lovin' it! Move over Victor Meldrew, I'm getting older & crustier by the day

It's not in good enough condition to house people who own their own socks

It's quite a decent size camp, if you take into account RTS, ACS, and the pitches / fields. I reckon you could build a small village on that - could easily fit a hospital, primary and secondary schools, a bunch of houses, a business park / small business workshops and a load more infrastructure. Why just have one when you could have it all?

There'd be a hell of a lot of excavation of unusable utilities and contaminated buildings.

Not to mention the small problem of ghosts - like the polish wartime apprentice who died riding a motorbike between the windows of two blocks.

Nah, just bulldoze the whole site, and use it as foundations for something decent. the SLAM blocks could probably be kept as student housing though.

No problem there, they're free to haunt the rubble as much as they want....
