Cheers for the link STL but, and to save anyone else the bother of trawling through 4 pages of posts, there is no satisfactory answer at the end. So what's the Bobby Moore? Can we or can't we claim?

How about you get your self a big set of bollox and claim, then let us know how you got on... Set a precedent, it is like the People Front of Judea on this subject.

Hmm.
Technically most of our uniform can be laundered at public expense. At least the overalls and trousers/jackets etc.
100 quid plus a year tax relief for washing a few shirts? Still, would be nice.

This is why I was asking whether or not it had been done before. My guess is that the reply will be "poke off, its part of your X-Factor". Or "poke off, put your shirts in with your other civvy laundry". Or just "poke off, ya chancer"!

And your shirts? Public expense? We have already been told to wash the new trousers in a cold wash... thats not public expense

Just playing Devil's Advocate here: What items of uniform are you OBLIGED to launder at your own expense? The system for the cleaning of uniform items is there to be used. The fact that so few of us use it is our problem isn't it?

Sorry, not quite sure who this is aimed at?
I mentioned shirts as being the item that would be claimed for so they would by definition not be at public expense?
As to the new trousers, you may well be right, I don't know if they refuse them for dry cleaning because like most people I just launder them myself (well, the wife does anyway)
Is the £145 the amount being claimed per year, or is it tax relief on £145 a year?

That Advocaat is a nightmare to get off your shirt if you spill it! Back on topic, I think you are obliged to launder all your kit - its just that Supply will only take the stuff for dry-cleaning, so shirts, lightweight trousers, socks, etc are down to you. Hence my expenses claim. Spurious, maybe, but worth a punt.

All,
This is an extract of Army Pay Regulations updates for this month,
319/88 TAX RELIEF REVIEW - LAUNDRY EXPENSES
Reference:
A. DSPSI 319/86 Issue 04/07.
1. Reference A informed units that HMRC has advised that the question of tax relief for laundry expenses is currently under consideration. It may be some time before a decision is reached on this and units and individuals are to await the outcome; no claims will be considered until then.
2. HMRC is still receiving a large amount of correspondence on this matter from service personnel.
3. Units are to put an entry on orders to get a message out to all personnel – in order to prevent more letters to HMRC trying to claim laundry expenses and also to warn those who have already written that they will not get a direct reply. Definitive direction will be promulgated when the discussions with SPVA and HMRC have been completed. Units and individuals are not to contact HMRC direct in respect of Tax Relief for laundry.

Up here at ISL today there has been an email flying around originating from Coningsby, suggesting that we can claim for 6 years of laundering our uniform at £140 per year, a total of £840, which is nice, but has anyone or know of anyone who received the cash or is this all a big one??

Appologies for the repeat performance.
I will shut up and read the other post, I have sent the claim away already though.
So has anyone had anything back, is there a date on that letter.
The tension is unbearable....
If anyone has tried using the laundry services they would know you need about 5 pairs of trousers to cover the time it takes to get stuff done with Bank holidays and shifts.

A good friend of mine has advised me that we can claim money back from the inland revenue as tax relief for uniform cleaning, and it can be back dated for 6 years.
Has anyone got any real info about this or is it just the usual bongo drum rumour control??

Its been around for years, I first heard the rumour about it 6 years ago and I known a guy who's actually got the dosh back (He showed me the slip that he'd got from the inland revenue with the rebate back in April). The only reason I never appiled was I didn't know how to apply for it, and nobody esle knew until my team leader walked into work with a template a few weeks back.

According to the RAF News this Tax Rebate is bunkum...... See the letters page in the latest one.
IIRC it is included (as is everything) in your salary/tax code and therefore you cannot claim!

MILITARY LAUNDRY EXPENSES
The MOD has recently become aware that there is some confusion on units regarding eligibility for tax relief for laundry expenses. This has been compounded by a recent chain letter purporting to enable individuals to claim back tax set against costs of laundering uniform items. This issue has recently been clarified in the RAF News, however for ease of access the information is replicated below.
In April 2003 Her Majesties Revenue and Customs (HMRC) provided information regarding miscellaneous expenses (haircuts, shoe polish etc). Specifically they advised that even though these expenses may be seen as necessary for work purposes each has a dual purpose, making them equally relevant to off duty hours. The tax legislation is clear in that expenses must be exclusively for work purposes and accordingly, no allowance can be given and therefore a claim should not be made on the tax return form. On 1 May 2007, this guidance was reiterated at a meeting with HMRC staffs. At this meeting HMRC also confirmed that no tax relief was available for Servicemen for the washing of their uniforms: officers, because they receive recompense for ‘upkeep’ within their tax allowance; and airmen because they have the option of having clothing laundered at unit level.
The MOD has been advised by HMRC that letters received by the Swansea Tax Office on this subject will not be actioned.

Okay where do I take my shirts and trousers then, oh I need them back in 4days please cos I am only allowed three pairs of trousers, and don't give me any of that must be in by Monday lunchtime and I can collect them a week tomorrow or the we are closed cos its a bank holiday, cos I will ba at work in my own supplied underpants.
When I do guard I expect my greens washing every other day and they had better be well pressed!!
Hang on can officers not get their clothes laundered at the same place as me?

I was at Clothing Stores here at Coningsby yesterday and thought I'd enquire about the laundry service whilst I was there.
The answer I got was:
"The laundry takes a week to come back. If you get it in before 1400hrs on the Monday, you'll get it back the following Tuesday. You are entitled to 8 shirts, one of which must be a long sleeved wedgewood for best blue. The rest can be long/short sleeved and light/dark blue. Here's the catch though - you are expected to make 1 shirt last 2 days so therefore (assuming you work no more than 5 days in every 7) you'll have 3 shirts in the laundry, 4 in your wardrobe and 1 as best blue."
I for one like a fresh shirt everyday, but maybe I'm strange for not wanting to be a reester!!::D:
