View Full Version : Its that time again.
Well its time for them to pull some names out of hats again I think?
Good luck to all of you who have collected enough tesco points to be on the board. (Except those of you who have only done 3 years in rank but never moved after you got your tapes!)
If anyone has any rumours on numbers, IM/ CIS tech breakdowns let us know as I know a few people who would be interested.
I have heard there has been some late promotions given out off the last board but looks like IMs only?
Not heard any rumours yet this year , think after last years farce with estimate wanting 60 then Chief clerks bulletin saying done 45 first 6 months and estimate 60 next 6 and then just staying at 45 they're keeping quiet.
Just have to wait and see, finishes soon think sitting mon - wed this week ( 25-27 Jun). Fingers crossed , off to Falklands next week so never know might get some news when there from some of the guys

You're absolutely right about the 3 year thing (in spite of PMA telling people you have to have 5 years in rank now) What you failed to add was that you should also be extremely poor at your primary task because you have about 150 secondary duties. That'll get you picked up for certain.
As for enough seniority, At least three IMs I know would only have had 3/4 assesments on last board. Two Cis techs I know got told they would be picked up and only having 3 assesments. There seems little emphasis placed on experience now, just if you have had a few good years. Usually as webmaster.
As an aside how many people were 61st last year? I heard two lads claim to have been told they were 63rd on the last board. and quite a few others were told they were in the 60s on the list. Am I just fortunate to know such unlucky people?

Of the 2 CIS Techs (I think I know both of them) 1 has got his third (he's also a first class cnut btw)
The other missed out when they re-jigged the numbers they needed.
I was actually told by the nice desk person "Someone promoted after only 3 assesments? That can't be right...? No you must be wrong....."

Often the case.
Any early indications?
I was told i was 61 off last years board - what is they're loads of that was in sixties!! Not even bothering to phone this time will wait and see again. Board finished today i think
I heard the slashing of posts at the centre of excellence, caused all the problems. Left a lot of lads with no jobs there, while places that needed them who were expecting guys further down the list missed out.
Would love to know the breakdown of IM slots to CIS tech slots.
Chatting about it at work rumour has it an IM got her third after 21/2 yrs in the job would have been 3 but had some time off for a baby.
Someone also told me about a guy in the sunny med getting picked up after only 2 full reports and an early 1 on posting overthere, specs, but how would the third get to the board if it sat in June and last assesment would have been october so did he get it on 2??? Not sure if he got chopped though.

Not only that but apparently, they are "offering promotion to IM Sgt for Cis Tech Cpls" in order to fill the IM posts.
Don't go IM, don't get promoted.

The PMA / mannning website now lists details of PSLs. About time I say!
For the current board it has 19 IMs and 40 Cis Techs Cpl to SGT, and where they reached on the reserve list. Said there was 60 last year for us.
Not sure what is ratified yet as no details of As.Bs...or size of field.

I came off of the board last year (cis tech cpl to sgt) at number 59 (out of 60)and found out this morning that they got up to 58! So you can imagine how good a mood I was in after I was told this "good news", cant wait to tell the wife. And then my sister rings me up (she's in the army) to tell me that shes promoted to major. So I feel even more chuffed now. And then me chief says "Dont worry (Insert name) if you missed it by one the last time, then you'll be top of the list for this one" Yeah right and monkeys might fly out of me arse. :PDT_Xtremez_09:

Guess you won't be checking your lottery numbers this week then?
oh look you were the 13 post too.
Are you going to ring the desk to check your pole position or would your lucky day continue with a "...oh I'm glad you called I just noticed you are due DWR"
Guess there is a whole new bucket load of young workshy charity workers with 3 years of specs snatching at their third?

Hey, you could always sell your soul, get a lobotomy and have your spine removed. AKA remuster to IM or go for commission!:PDT_Xtremez_34:
The lads in my place phone the desk early this week, two of them weren't on it , i've not had enough 6000's yet only 3 so i didn't ask maybe i should have. I know the guy that got his third after 3, we left cosford as JT's in jun 00 and he picked his 3rd up last oct.
We when all spoke to the desk we were told that there are no promotions to sgt for cis techs but if you were lucky enough to come of the board then they might offer you IM but you would have to re-muster. After the phone was hung up and we all cried into our brews we came up with a couple of questions that need an answer.
1. was there a joint board for all cpl's tg4 this year?? and was that the orginal plan. we all thought that there were seperate boards up until sgt-fs when we were all in the same pot.
2. What is the bench mark to get your 3rd a min of 4 or five years in rank, seemed to work well in the old days. people gained experiance and then made good sgt's..how can you be one of those if you have done 10 years in the RAF yet???

Put it this way - I'm 6 yrs in rank, 15 yrs total time, sitting on 6 and Spec Rec, I have 2 high profile secondary duties (including one RAF comitee post) and I didn't get a sniff- was told I was only a B grade FFS !!!
Its a joke.

For what its worth, should have saw this comming really.
They always said the final plan was to have more IMs doing IT than CIS TECHs doing radars, yet the TG11 /TG3 split was always the other way round. 250 TG11 Cpls : 650 TG3 Cpls They tried to get us to remuster before I think but wasn't very well publicised. Now I assume they have a lack of TG 11 to promote, after having to scape the barrel last year, would explain the number of TG11s getting it after 3/4 6000's.
If there wasn't the stigma, "IMs are thicko's... CisTEchs are the clever ones" (dont bite, but that is the general stereotype) then yes we would be happy to go across and do a bit of IT.
IS THIS WHY THE PVR TIME FOR CIS TECH HAS GONE FROM 6 TO 12 MONTHS?
when IMs is still at 6?
I gave up when they anounced TG4 and became one of those waiting for the pension, I reackon this will cause a few more of us to give up.......
1. was there a joint board for all cpl's tg4 this year?? and was that the orginal plan. we all thought that there were seperate boards up until sgt-fs when we were all in the same pot.
Still two boards as the IM one has only just sat, but it seems that there are only IM slots? I know they cut ours short last year so ended up promoting some guys who never had slots, as no SGTs got promoted for last two years may be true? I can see why they would want to promote some experienced TG3s rather than fill all the IM slots with Bs from 11?

a good few years as a JT and build on that with a half dozen as a Cpl was good in the old Airforce but we are near enough in the army now...
Is the 12 month PVR true? Someone else told me it was in the PB but I thought it was a wind up?

read the latest manning newsletter and it reports no promotions for either side of hte trade for the first six months. The peanuts seem to be very low on numbers, not sure what their cut off was for an A, heard ours was quite high.
Never mind am sure it will pick up in a few years, just in time for the new TG4. Just like the new ELMs that came through.

Either through re-mustering or mass PVR there are not enough techies left anymore. We tried to get one stood up at our place and got told that there were none.
Cheers K**.
At least there's less competition for promotion now.

Just had a CIS Tech slot changed (was going to put downgraded but must remember to be nicer to the peanuts) to OM, now been told that as the FMDL for OM is lower than CIS Tech I'll have to wait for a replacement as the post is being gapped. ::/:
Just read that the PVR time for CIS Ms has dropped to 6 months again, wish they would make their minds up. Think they are hoping to open some slots for promotions.
Also got told by a buddy that he was told they don't have any free slots for techs so might have to fill an IM slot.

Doesn't surprise me, they are trying (successfully) to destroy the trade from within! The swines! :0 :0
I'm going to hack them off by staying in for my 22 and grumbling to all the OM's about how it used to be when Tech's were Tech's, etc and how we used to do depth 'C' maintenance! We still do a bit in the place in hampshire, on tx'ers mainly. But that's down to an element of pride and dis-trust in the stores system! Tsk, bloomin stackers! ::/:

It's like we were told in November, things will start improving once they begin getting the recruits at Tossford, they are 70% on their target.
We're overmanned.....
We have no SACs to fill in for the CPLs if we promote them....
We need IMs......
Atlas will not employ IMs
We need SGTS/FSs overseas but must have CIS TECH background...
Atlas Will use IMs....
Promotions...
No Promotions....
Must remuster to IM they are the future....
oooh don't remuster CIS TECHs have a bright future...
Does anyone know what is going on?
Let not forget who got us into this situation in the first place.
TS put forward idea of TG4
TG4 formed
TG4 structure confusing as it doesn’t cope with TG11 and TG3 legacy equipment
Training changed but doesn’t support TG3 and TG11 legacy equipment
Training contracted (ATLAS to do training at St Athens delayed) so equipment used for training for legacy equipment not supported
PSF, Careers Offices confused.
Ex TG3 and TG11 still treated as separate trades within TG4
Witch hunting rumors point blame to TG 3 and TG 11 TS, dependendant on if you are Ex TG3 or TG11.
TS try’s to put things right with more info.
Legacy kit is still with us since no new equipment due in and you can't contractorise all of RAF, who would be left to go OOA?
PSF and Careers still confused
After 3 years of falling recruitment figures suddenly realised that the core manning would be low and therefore stop promotions.
Panic sets in and so change trade name to ICT so innocents who know no better leaving school will join our trade.
All the while this goes on the government wants our trade reduced, but if we reduce who will keep the trade going as all the experience of those who joined in the 80's and 90's would be lost, so who can operate the legacy equipment?
**** happens and the TS have broken umbrellas
Plus since the contractor uses ex military to service contracted equipment what happens when those who leave do not have the skill for the contractor to use to service the equipment it is contracted to maintain?
We are in a catch 22 situation but it is now revolving around until we will be so much siht there will be no possible way to recover it and we will end up employing immegrants with the neccessary skills to do the job similair to what has happened to the NHS.
Well I did say i like a good moan
I can see it now, Watchman fails and SATCO calls the helpdesk only to be answered by a call centre in India!! Put on hold for an eternity at a rate of £1 a minute, just to be told they've never heard of a Watchman but would you like your IGS account upgrading! Yep that'll work!! (or am I being cynical?)

A bit off topic here guys, but I'm a Techie (god only knows what my trade title is now) but I've ended up working in a combined service desk and commcen and the heirarchy here is a mix of techs and peanuts. The techs on shift have been told that we now have to do some OJT on the peanuts equipments and learn how to do signals etc.
Just wondering if anyone knows if we have to do this or if we can tell them where to go, along the lines of "if I wanted to be a peanut, I would have joined as one".
Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Do they still send signals, I thought the world went to e-mail. Is it even taught at Cosford anymore.

Commcens have all gone, the TS's said so. Any legacy equipment will be looked after by the Techs so in theory the IMs should not be touching any of that commcen stuff! Grab it, cover it in 731s and get a screwdriver out.
Or is it that time again when we go full circle? the cheecky gits have got our Geeky IT slots and now are lumbering the typing jobs on us we'll be answering the phones soon and manning the helpdesk.....hang on phones ringing...DOH!!!
Back on topic, it will be that time again soon!!

My thoughts would be precisely that - tell them to ram it. I'm not one of the ones who whinged about the re-structure but I'm starting to have serious reservations.
I'm the only TG3 in a section full of Assimilated ex-TG11....the other day I handed an SAC a multi-meter to check for 240v on the end of a power cable. I was met with a blank stare and the words "can you do it? I haven't got a clue"
Converesely, I hand all enquiries about signals straight ovet to them. I've recently "inherited" the custodian job and I ALWAYS double check with my ex-TG11 JNCO before I do anything.
