Since most of us on here are fairly well travelled, how about a new thread about the best places to visit and stay across the globe? All of your pucker gen about the places to be when abroad in here please!
If you're considering visiting Prague, The Andel's Hotel in Praha 5 is exceptional and quite reasonably priced too! Very cool decor and not far from the Charles Bridge and city center. Wenceslas Sq is a taxi ride, but thats not a bad thing!
chat on.

When in Bahrain, why not stay at the ritz-carlton. Very nice. However, don't go to the cocktail bar and drink Brandy Kegs with aircrew, and certainly don't get in a round with a Scouse Squipper. :PDT_Xtremez_21:
But whatever you do, don't go to the Iraqi restaurant off Exhibition Avenue. :PDT_Xtremez_02:

I can recommend the Intercontinental Hotel in Doha, and the Caravan resturant does top food really cheap.

Obviously not tried the delights of the Maharaja in the Souks, Moven Pick Hotel or La Veranda in the Sheratons Health and Fitness club. The last two are not cheap at 200 local blats at time (not including drinks) but as a high pay band (at the momentl) techie I can afford it!
Still the Maharaja is a three course meal for not more than a fiver as is Garveys and the rugby club so food and beer for all pockets.
If your now jealous, I'll get you a doggy bag tommorow night for you to sample!
:p :p :p
Mrs Miggins pie shop in downtown Carlisle. Just up from the British Legion! Good night out with the old boys and cheap beer!
Also "Kos" bar in Albacete, Espana, NSE dets at the nearby Airbase.
BTW MFM its "Pukka" not "Pucker". The former I believe is an old John Company saying from the days of the Raj. Apparantly ba5tardi5ed from the Hindustani word "Pakka" meaning "Substantial". The latter being something you do with your lips when kissing ar5e!
Just an observation!

It would be rude not to mention Joanna's.
Also, there is a very nice bar, Fido's, in San Pedro on Ambergris Cay, Belize. Not sure whether the bar was named after the owner or the key ingredient in most dishes on the menu. If, however, you find yourself on the main land, the Hi Et in San Ignacio isn't bad - £3 per night, hot and cold running water, no cockroaches. Arguably better value than some Messes...
:PDT_Xtremez_21:
If, however, you're heading East (but not that far East) and looking for somewhere to have a decent night out, Norwich has more than its fair share of nice restaurants and pubs. If you like real ales, the Fat Cat (Nelson Rd off Dereham Rd) arguably has the best selection, but the Belgian Monk (off Pottergate) which specialises in continental beers is worth a look too. Failing that the Murderers off Timber Hill is a decent night out.
If you end up at either Cottesmore or Wittering, IMHO, Stamford is worth avoiding. Its just too pretentious and over priced. Instead head to Oakham or some of the surounding villages - the Jackson Stops in Stretton does good food as does the Olive Branch in Clipsham.
Right, I think that's enough to be going on with for now...:PDT_Xtremez_22:
Another very decent bar in Norwich is the Walnut Tree Shades, its down one of the back alley's in the city centre (one of those places you need to be shown otherwise you'll never find it), then there's always the Wig and Pen (opposite the law courts), The Ribs of Beef (Magdalen street), the list goes on and on and these are just a few off the top of my head.
As for the Jackson's Stops and The Olive Branch I can concur both are exceptional pubs with excellent food, but for me I prefer the Stops (mainly due to the fact they don't get to wound up with me when I walk out having forgot to pay again for the god knows how many times, like they say they know where I live).:PDT_Xtremez_30:

There used to be a Pizza restaurant in London called Millepino's. It was around the corner from the Transport and General Worker's Union, off Theobald Road & The Kingsway. Not sure if it's still open now, but it did the best and cheapest pizza in the City. The place was run by a bunch of Romanians (!) who were most happy to keep very cheap wine flowing to your table and would come and do magic tricks and folk dancing in the middle of the restaurant for everyone - if they felt p!ssed enough that evening.
Happy days.

The kimberly inn findhorn --marvellous fish n chips
joshuas Brunswick MA
Dont know the name of it but the titty bar opposite holiday beach and casino hotel is quite good and for only a few dollars you can also sample the goods on offer ! (curacao)
The camel toe basra - lovely floor lighting
The Crowne Plaza (formally holiday inn) in Salalah is very good, cheap and on the sea front. You can drink there as well. If your stuck on thumrait they pick you up and drop you off if you get a group together.
In Norwich the best pub by far is the Fat Cat. It is a real ale pub and won the CAMRA National Pub of the Year award in 2005.

Wig and Mitre, steep hill, Lincoln, good real ale and "country" food.
Punch and Judys, Covent Garden, Aussie barmaids, Yum!

If you are ever in Cape Town get yourself to a grill place called sols. Its a taxi ride but if you like massive portions of meat for cheap prices its great. The biggest burger weighs in at 1.2KG and you get your name chiseled in the wall if you can eat it in the set time. It has offers on most nights of the week one of them being all you can eat ribs for about a fiver mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ribs.

further to my last....
When in Bahrain, take a trip to a lovely Chinese place called 'Bam-Bu'. They do a fantastic 11 or 12 BD (less than 20 quid) set menu that includes a bottomless wine or stella glass. The food is divine and plentiful - just try the crispy lemon chicken - gorgeous. The decor is very plush, modern but with an obvious oriental theme. Can't recommend it enough.
On a more domestic note, if you find yourself in the Huntingdon/St Ives area; try the 3 Jolly Butchers in the village of Houghton. If you're hungry don't bother with the restaurant - the bar snacks are great. Sizzling Fajitas with all the trimmings for about 7 quid. Lovely. They have a fantastic beer cellar with a good range of real beers - usually IPA, Spitfire, Speckled Hen plus a guest beer. They also sell Warsteiner in proper logoed pilsner glasses.
well after reading through all these comments, it seems taht you all need to get in the dirty of it all and volenteer for a war zone!!! are you all war dodging??? :PDT_Xtremez_28:

why on earth would you volunteer to go to a war zone? If I'm sent to one - fine, I'll go. But given a choice, I'd rather stay in the rear, with the gear. And you might as well enjoy it.
Of course, when on det you don't fully appreciate the nice eateries and bars you can visit when you get the (occasional) chance - Having a gorgeous meal in Bam-bu with a GE and 3 lineys is not quite the same as enjoying one with the Mrs. :PDT_Xtremez_42:

The problem is, is that there doesn't seem to be too many great watering holes in any of the hotspots we go to. Even if there was getting off base to go to them would be a little tricky. Saying that the Thai restaurant (forgot the name) at Kabul was top notch, very good food and some very nice wines with the best bit being that there's no stupid two can rule.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Cultural pub crawl from the main square is a laugh for a few sharpeners & get your bearings, and as Bitburger said, watch your wallet - especially when there is good looking totty around.

Oh seeing as Valentines is fast approaching - those of you in the RAF Lincs area may be interested in a Michellin starred little known seafood restaurant that does the most wonderful lobster.
It is about 20 miles from Lincoln, off the A52, called Pauls, in the village of Bottesford.
Pricey, but well worth it!!!!!

Indeed! Also the @miltary owned' establishments are good too there. The CAF Club is beautiful and the armed forces also have a country club that is really good and the food is amazing. We also tried a traditional dancing venue - cant remember the name - but it looked like easter island on the outside and had a local live band and lots of costumes and dancing during the meal...entertaining!

Methinks Realist78 and DoesMyBumLookBigInThis were not too impressed with the board and lodgings I provided for them whilst they were passing through Cancun in Mexico then!!! What was up with the teepee with a thatched roof?
Talking of Cancun, I know of a few eating places which I can recommend from italian, mexican, steakhouses seafood, etc - but too many to put on here. Same goes for Veracruz in Mexico too.
If anyone wants more details on places in Mexico, then drop me a line.

Nothing wrong with the teepee, wish we had a couple more nights there. The ball ache (at every destination on the way) was the accommodation screw up at each hotel. If people had only used the lists that they had requested, and were sent, there wouldn't have been the check in faff, wasting VDT!:PDT_Xtremez_09:
How come nobody's mentioned Belize!!! Jewel of the Carribean!!
Bi Joes & Ma blakes just outside the camp - The Big C and the Queen of hearts down town - ahh the memories. Still scratching after 29 years :PDT_Xtremez_30:
Hi All,
I recommend including the attached www link as part of your pre-jolly procedures:

Priceless!
On a personal note I thoroughly recommend the Trafalger Square Hilton in London. Aside from possessing Europe's longest bourbon bar ["Rockwell"] it also has a cracking roof bar for those balmy summer sundowners.
Enjoy.

The Holiday Inn in Key West (particularly during spring-break when it was full of totty) and definitely before it became the gay resort of the Florida Keys.
Off Topic Top Tip for the spams, Andover E3s don't fit very well at the civil airport. Prop wash from two 14 ft props in thrust reverse tends to blow away little cessnas.

are you sure its michelin starred?
Its not on their website, the resturant called Harry's Place in Great Gonerby near Grantham is the only Michelin star restaurant in lincs.... Oh and its fantastic!!! Been there 3 times and the service, food and ambiance is by far the best I have ever had the pleasure to experience!!!

Krakow, Poland, 4 Zlotys to the pound
Go to Auschwitz, it costs 100 zlotys to get there and back (£20). On the lash, head for the city centre. I think it's called the Cloth Market. Women - stunning!! Beer - cheap!! 68p a pint anyone?
Try the communism tour, 160 Zlotys, they go round the old quarter in a Trabant, and have a preserved 1970's Communist workers' apartment to see.
Go to the Med Bar - barmaids dress as nurses. The Showtime Bar for live bands (In English, as well as Polish), and the Crazy bar is a laugh (with a name like that it better be).
Another good 'un- Roosters, their version of hooters. Fit women and dirt cheap! Can you tell I loved it there?
