Graphics Card

Gents,

At the mo I have an ATI X300 128mb graphics card that came with my pc, (approx 3 years old now) and I am looking at getting a newer / better one.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent card and if so, where to get it from / best prices etc..?

I have a budget of approx £80 max (incase Scaleywife happens upon my post!!) and it will be to fit a Gigabyte MoBo in a PCI-E slot.

I have used Nvidea cards for years now, and love them.
I run a lot of hungry games and these do the bis.........

Beware my friend. what you need nowadays is pixel shading. a lot of games wont give you the time of day without it, despite the fact you may have a super duper compooter. i would say the GEforce Nvidia 7600 pretty much the best AGP card available ( which i have just bought cos my pooter doesnt have a PCI express port) would do. cost me 89 quid however that was fm a shop not online. Should be cheaper online methinks.

Is it worth going for a 512mb card or sticking with a 256mb card..? Also I presume that the speed is indicated by the numbers in the description.. e.g. 7600 GT or 7300 GS..

Have a look at microdirect.co.uk they are one of the cheapest and are very good. Go for NVIDIA or ATI chipsets. If you get a copy of PC Pro they have an A-List of components they recommend the GIGABYTE 8600GT for £86 as an excellent value card.

Not any more dude, they seem to pick the numbers out of a hat ! oh for the days of Glide, OPENGL sucks donkeys. 3DFX were so much better ! :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Numbers can mean so little. Easy way to think of it is like the beamer series

8 series or 7 series. The lower end (for instance) 8600 would more than likely get a whooping from a 7800GT. The 8's are not all better than the 7's, their just newer!!!

Same goes for the ATi cards. the X1300 is positively crap compared to the X850.

Best bet is to hit google for some benchmark scores. Ususally the bench them in a similar price range so you'll see how much performance you get for your money.

eek I wouldn't get the GS, spend a few extra pennies and get the 7600GT much better performance from an affordable midrange card - mine is great

I've just got the 7600gs(for free) and because of that, I can't complain about it. The fact is that I really can't fault it.
I'll find out the truth in a couple of weeks as I've just ordered a new mobo/cpu/ram.

I may change my mind after this little upgrade.

To be honest, I am more than likely gonna go for the 7800GT. However, will it play games like CoD2 / CoH / BF2142 ok..? And how 'future proof', if they ever can be, is it likely to be..? Scaleywife would kick the sh*t out of me if I then had to upgrade again in the near future!!

RADEON™ X1950 PRO, (512 MB) Graphic Card AGP is one of the best AGP X 8 cards going. It will play games like BF2 / B2142 on highest detail with no problems... average price is £100 but you can get it for cheaper than that online in places like e-bay etc
