THE GUNNER
After the security of childhood and before the insecurity of maturity we find .............the Gunner.
Gunners are found everywhere. In bars, in debt, on leave, in lieu, in bed, on ranges and in trouble. A Gunner is laziness with a pack of cards and a millionare without a penny, bravery with a grin and dejection without a girl.
A Gunner is a composite individual. He has the slyness of a fox, the brains of a rocking horse, the common sense of a taoist, the aptitude of an elephant, the fighting savage of a wild-cat, the stomach of a boa, the aspirations of a casanova, and when he wants something its usually a leave pass.
He likes girls, ladies, birds, women, females and members of the opposite sex. He dislikes answering letters, hairy shirts, wearing his puttees, his superior officers and getting up in the morning, not to mention RAF food, free holidays in Ulster, the morning after the night before and the curfew imposed on him at home.
No-one can write so seldom, say so little yet think about it so much, no-one can get so much out of receiving letters, civilian clothes, a pint of good ale or a copy of playboy.
A Gunner is a magical creature, you can lock him out of your house but not out of your heart. You can take him off your mailing list but not off your mind.
You might as well give up. He's your long distance lover, your bright eyed bundle of worry, even though, your shattered dreams seem insignificant when he comes home after a few years and greets you with these innocent words;
"I'm back, did you miss me?.....
Not my words, i'm not that clever. Cribbed it off the RAF Regiment group on MSN.
Is that a pretty good summation of what constitutes a Gunner or what??

I'm sure you could substitute GUNNER with TECHIE and it would be just as appropriate!

Sorry to steal your thunder but a very quick google turfed this up:
Sgt. William Pratt 1958-1967
What a Marine is. After the security of childhood and the insecurity of a second childhood, you will find a good Joe called a Marine. Mothers tolerate them, girls love them, and the United States supports them. Marines are found everywhere, where they do and don't belong, on leave, in bars, in jail, in love, and even in debt. Marines come in different sizes, weights and states of sobriety. He has the energy of a turtle, the slyness of a fox , the brain of an idiot, the stores of an eighty year old man, the appetite of a elephant, and the inspiration of a Casanova. When he is into something it's usually a weekend pass. He likes girls, dislikes getting up in the morning, writing, superior officers, walking to chow, swabbies, and wearing his uniform. No one can get as munch in one pocket, a little black book, a pair of dice, a letter from his girl, and the rest of last weeks pay. No one can write so seldom, yet think of you so often, can get so munch out of civilian clothes, reading letters and one cigarette. A Marine is a magic creature. You can cross him out of your mind, but you might as well give up, his your long distance lover, your bundle of joy. All your shattered dreams seem insignificant when he comes home and says those two magic words, HI HONEY.
There are other versions, substituting "sailor" or "soldier" for "marine". In short, it's a great piece of prose that applies equally across the military.
I know that I would not like to advertise the fact I had either the brains of an idiot/rocking horse.... but then I'm not a Gunner or a Marine.

So why have you advertised it then?

It can't have been a 'complete' summation of a 'Gunner' because it fails to mention the intrinsic need for a 'wedgie beret'
So why have you advertised it then?
Cos I'm not a Marine or a Gunner....I thought that was obvious from the first post...
Cos I'm not a Marine or a Gunner.....

So, In essence you have just admitted to having the brains of an idiot/rocking horse.

I had the choice of which trade I joined, so i picked one where we have to have an ability to spell. :PDT_Xtremez_08:
So, In essence you have just admitted to having the brains of an idiot/rocking horse.
As the the other rock can't spell I will take it that you are the one that can't read.
In the beginning there was a post by a rock boasting to the fact they have the brains of a rocking horse and or idiot, depending on which version of the plagarised 'quote'. This was buried in amongst all the other drivel about being so wonderful, they missed the bit about being a bit thick.
I therefore pointed out that IF I were a gunner or marine, then I would not want to advertise to the world that I was a bit thick, and as I am not either one, I can advertise it.
In the end, most people assume that, rightly or wrongly that to be a gunner or a marine you need to be a bit thick, there is no need to confirm their suspicions...and that is another bit of plagerism.
If you need help with the big words find someone to look'em up for you. :PDT_Xtremez_28:

So, you have admited it then? Thank you.
I would suggest before you start putting people down for their spelling you check your own.
Reading some of your old posts I have found the following mistakes in your spelling - occassions, isnt, cant, typres to name a few, but then again I joined a trade that can't spell.
Enough said.
Is there any real need to denigrate this thread into the pedantic use of grammar, and dodgy spelling? It's an old ode that amused me when I joined the Corps.
