View Full Version : Best Rock band

Who would be in the best Rock Band ever and what would they bring to the band? My choice would be:

Tommy Lee on Drums just because of his rock kudos

Flea on Bass because he can play it like it's a six string

James Hetfield on Rythm guitar and occasional vocals, because I don't know how the f@ck he can play rythm and sing like he does at the same time

Slash on Lead, simply because he's god

and finally, Bruce Dickinson on Vocals because he can wail like no other.

I haven't included keyboards because I think they belong to groups (brilliant though they were) like Deep Purple etc, but feel free to add extra guitars, keyboards, tambourines where appropriate

Difficult one as there are so many gooduns out there

Stick with Bruce on Vocals
Slash on Lead
Geddy Lee on bass/keyboards (yes he can do both)
Neil Pheart on Drums/percussion (Listen to YYZ by Rush)
James Hetfield stays for now

Good starter though

Tommy lee ? your having a laugh !
Drums - Neil Peart (Rush), the greatest percussionist ever with no peers who are even close, except for Stu Copeland (The Police).
Guitars - would have to be Yngwie Johann Malmsteen(Rush) and John Petrucci (Dream Theater).
Bass - John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) or Mark King (Level 42) not a rocker, but a truly AMAZING bass player.
Keyboards Either Rick Wakeman or Jon Lord for that truly rock keyboard sound.
Vocals - A tough one here as there are 3 who fit the classic bill.
David Coverdale for the smooth touch.
Bradley Delp (Boston) or James LaBrie (Dream Theater) for the ROCK !! :PDT_Xtremez_30:

If you've not heard of Malmsteen, Wiki bio is here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yngwie_Malmsteen) check him out, if you like Slash you'll LOVE this guy !

Penfold, I am so dissappointed in your choice of Slash ! :PDT_Xtremez_06:

I only put Tommy Lee cos of the size of his drum kit, the fact that it went upside down and cos he's just so "Rock and Roll". Your choice doesn't have to be based purely on ability

Cozy Powell for drums, Coverdale for Vocals and there has to be a place for Blackmore and/or Hendrix.

Nice to see another music thread with nobody moaning about it!!!

For me - as a born again rock chick.......

Vocals - have to say, SB you are right with David Coverdale, although I have a love of the vocal talents of Danny Bowes of Thunder too.

Lead guitar - sorry - only one guitarist for me - has to be Jimi Hendrix - amazing talent - although if it was more Bluesey - would have to be Gary Moore

Bass - that has to be Phil Kennemore from Y&T or maybe Cliff Williams.

Drums - hmm.... now as a frustrated drummer myself, that is a tricky one - I would have said the legend that was Cozy Powell - but maybe Rick Allen, as always had a soft spot for him.

But hey! They are just favourites of mine - so guess its all down to personal choice!!!

Drums: Dave Lombardo (Slayer)

Bass: Cliff Burton (Metallica). Good solid player who could also make the bass sing if needed. Genius but sadly dead.

Rhythm Guitar: Scott Ian (Anthrax) or Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters). Solid but not flashy players who would add personality to the band (no room for shrinking violets in this line up).

Lead guitar: Difficult choice, but I'll go for Hendrix.

Vocals: Matthew Bellamy from Muse. Incredible vocal range, fantastic stage presence. As a bonus, he's one of the best lead guitarists around and a fantastic pianist when needed. He is the rock and roll embodiment of LEAN.:PDT_Xtremez_14:

As a bonus, there are at least 4 good song writers there too.

Agree with the fact that the guy has HUGE talent, but he is much more of an instumentalist than a band member.

Either he, or the vocalist would be wasted.

Drums - Cozy Powell (Black Sabbath). If not available, then Animal from The Muppets.
Bass - John Entwhistle (The Who)
Lead Guitar - Brian May (Queen)
Rythym Guitar - Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones)
Vocals - Paul Rogers (Free) (only if Roger Daltrey/Freddie Mercury have full diaries)
Keyboards (if needed) - Johnny Fingers (Boomtown Rats)

The next question would surely be who would write the tunes/lyrics?

I think you need a visit from the CDT team, apart from James Hetfield/Chris Cornell/Lemmy/Bruce Dickonson on vocals you could have Tarja from Nightwish, Amy Lee from Evinecence, Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation, Keith Kaputon from Life of Agony, Jonathon Davies from Korn there are many vocalists that are beyond him

What suprises me is a group like nightwish in all it's rock/metal goodness with a singer of operatic power and quality.

Another vocalist to consider would be Corey Taylor from Slipknot

To be honest, as long as no-one suggests the "singer" from sepultura, or "singers" of that ilk, I'll be happy!

Who can honestly like an album with an hour of shouting down the mic!

Nightwish is quite refreshing, but can only handle it in small doses. Whilst the operatic tones are quite refreshing, sometimes it's nice to actually hear what the lyrics are (hence the comment above)

SB, you should be shot for the Yngwie Malmsteen suggestion. two words sums up about any solo of his, Harmonic Minor ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_minor Sorry to bring up a guitar related comment in a rock band thread though.....)

Almost as good as the three chord wonders themselves, the Quo

I prefer Gary Moores version of Over the hills

Jet black - drums
Gary Moore & Richie Sambora - Guitars
John Deacon - Bass (it's just got to be him)
For vocals seeing as it can't be Freddie then has to be Steve Tyler

Because I'm a bit odd, my line up is a follows:

Guitars - Beck (Hansen) and BB King

Drums - Jack White (A drummer before he was a singer or guitarist)/David Hyde (The Futureheads)

Bass - Mani (Roses/Primal Scream)

Singer - Hmm, tricky one this but think I will go for... Miss Kate Jackson (The Long Blondes). Cracking voice and a hottie to boot.

Maybe a bit more alternative than "Rawk!" but what the hell.

Failing that, lets go over the top with some Jim Steinman/Meatloaf collaborations!!

Pete Townshend for Guitars though!

John Bonham on Drums

Flea on Bass

Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) on Rhythm

Tony Banks (Genesis) for some heafty 70s rock Keyboards

Matt from Muse on vocals, awsome voice

While they wouldn't definitley be in my band of all time we seem to have forgotten Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, The Edge, Bono, Bonnie Tyler, Robert Plant, Bon Scott, Steve Harris, and Nicko McBrain.
All in various 'rock' bands and all have a follwoing of some sort.

Fcuk, I've had this argument with my drummer so many bloody times! For me though...

Drums- Vinnie Paul (Pantera/Damageplan) or Lars Ulrich. Cannot decide on that one, both blew me away first time I heard them. Sod it, Lars Ulrich.

Bass- Cliff Burton (Metallica, RIP) without a doubt. When they recruited him at one of his gigs, they didn't realise it was a bass player at first- they were looking around for who was playing a lead solo. Pulled like a motherfcuker with his fingers, never used fancy effects, and if I'm ever half the bassist he was I'd be the happiest man in the world.

Rhythm Guitar- Dimebag Darrell (Pantera/Damageplan, RIP)- WOW. The reason I play Deans. Absolutely immense, crushing riffs and cooler than penguin pi55. Tragic loss when he was shot on stage.

Lead Guitar- Slash (GNR/Velvet Revolver)- Who needs a tremolo bar to bend notes when you can just bend the guitar instead? 4th best guitarist ever? Behind Hendrix? Fcuk off, NME. Just got to see the Godfather solo he pulls off when playing live- not sure I've ever seen someone as at one with their axe as him.

Lead Guitar 2- Kerry King (Slayer)- awesome guitarist, even with 9lbs of nails round his arms. I was going to say Dave Mustaine but then this supergroup would only last about 5 minutes before everyone got pi55ed off with him and sacked it. I know that's three guitarists, but hell, it works ok for Maiden so it works ok for me.

Vocals- Rob Zombie- no question. Top voice, written some awesome (and downright bizarre) songs, and you know you'd always have the coolest videos and album covers out there.

And support acts? Rockbitch (for the stage show, nobody'd care about how bad the music was, and for those that did it'd only get better), Dumpy's Rusty Nuts, Misfits, Motorhead. Oh, and my band in there somewhere. After Rockbitch, to give us a fighting chance of sounding half decent.

my personal favourites

Drums - John Bonham
Bass - Flea
Guitars - Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green
Vocals - Robert Plant

Guitars - Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour (fight it out over solos!)
Vocals - Janis Joplin

Drums - Lars Ulrich

Rythm - Jimmy Page
Bass - Cliff Williams

This is a tough one as there are so many talented musicians out there but if i had to choose a lineup then this would be it.

Drummer:
This is a hard one as i am a drummer myself. The drummers that influenced me are Buddy Rich (RIP) with his big band orchestra, Keith moon of the Who (RIP), Nicko Mcbrain of Iron Maiden, Vinnie Paul of pantera/Rebel meets Rebel & Damageplan, Nick menza of Megadeth, and Tommy lee of motley crue. However all that said, my main influence and No 1 choice for drummer would have to be the GOD that is NEIL PEART of Rush (Say no more)

Guitars:
DIMEBAG DARRELL (RIP) of Pantera/Rebel meets Rebel/Damageplan, he is without a doubt the greatest metal guitarist that has ever lived. But as he is not alive then there can only be one other guitarist on the planet that could fill his shoes and that is ZAKK WYLDE of Black Label Society & Ozzy Osbourne. He simply pi*ses all over slash.

Bass:
STEVE HARRIS of Iron Maiden, He is the founder member of the Uk's biggest metal band and he take's no sh*t. watching him play is awesome as he commands the stage.

Vocals:
This is a hard one as there are alot of good vocals out there but when i really think about it the only one that could fit the job is ROB HALFORD of Judas Priest, his voice is amazing (just listen to Blood red skies if you dont believe me.

Oh and Mozart on Keys lol

And he's had to learn how to play the guitar again after he slept on his hand and cut off the blood supply!! He'll always be a squillion times better than me though. And he's discovered God !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drums - Cozy Powell.
Bass – Mark King.
Lead Guitar – Gary Moore.
Vocals - Paul Rogers.
Keyboards – John Lord.
All songs written by Phil Lynott.
Private jet flown by Bruce Dickinson.

Bass: Bruce Thomas (any real bass player knows ALL about Bruce's genius)

Drums: Derek Grant (Alkaline Trio - check him out drum wanna-be's)

Keyboards: Steve Nieve (the master)

Singer/songwriter: Elvis Costello

Some interesting combinations so far but here's my ultimate band:

Vocals - Glenn Hughes (just awesome and sings blues/rock like no other)
Lead Guitar - Randy Rhodes (an unbelievably skillful player)
Rythym Guitar - Malcolm Young (the unsung heart of AC/DC - there isn't a better man to do the job)
Bass - John Entwhistle (a given - there is no other bass player that can touch him)
Drums - Jason Bonham (has proven that he is as good as his old man, if not better)

There's so much I'd agree with on here but I haven't yet seen anyone mention:
Ronnie James Dio for vocals.
Who could possibly forget the early days of Rainbow (specifically Stargazer from 'Rainbow Rising', still puts chills up and down my spine) and even some of the Black Sabbath tunes. A midget with a massive voice IMO. :PDT_Xtremez_28:

And I would also throw in Randy California (Randy Wolfe) on guitar (at the age of 14 Jimi Hendrix plucked him out of anonymity but his mum wouldn't let him come to the UK 'cos she thought he was too young :D . And there is a rumour that Jimmy Page plagurised one of his songs when Page wrote Stairway to Heaven).

Vocals - Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) / ZP Theart (Dragonforce) / Dexter Holland (The Offspring)

Bass - Flea (RHCP) / Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) / Gary Mounfield (Stone Roses)

I would have to go for Lars Ulrich (The Large Oilrig) on drums, even though he is a pretentious pr1ck.

Brian Johnson as lead vocals as he has one of the best ROCK voices in the world.

Brian Kahanek on Lead guitar, (yes I do play Guitar Hero!)

Steve Harris on bass as he brings some awsome song writing talent to the band as well as staggering skillz with a bass!

If I had to pull in any extra talent it would be Andrew WK or Henry Rollins for enthusiasm and stage presence.
