As promised I have made some enquiries as to what the GP sirgeries n civvy street are obliged to provide.

Anyone who is not resident within the doctors catchment area but who is temporarily staying there with friends/family at work etc is entitled to treatment as a temporary resident. there is no limit to the number of times that a patient may be seen or number of times he may register.

A GP can prescribe medication for you as aproprate, he can provide certification of unfitness to work/travel but may require a payment for the first weeks crtification of unfitness to work as in civvy street the first week of any sickness is covered by self certification.

They are obliged provide treatment for anybody who is acutely ill and who is temporarilly within the catchment boundary.

They are not obliged to provide chronic illnes management and long term care plans for anyone not reistered on their lists but frequently do. Most doctors will provide replacement prescriptions etc for temporary patients on long term rug managements plans under their own doctors.

The NHS manager I spoke to was not aware of any special rules regarding the forces and indeed most Docs simply don't care or need to know anything other than your symptoms and medical background to treat you. She is however checking to see if there are special rules which do apply.

Remember this is purely from the civvy side of the NHS, service rules and regs obviously may dfferent and may vary from camp to camp.

the bottom line is though, "if you are sick and away from military medical establishments your local GP is obliged to treat your immediate health needs. Follow up from that treatment is down to the RAF"
