Tried the Beta releases and yes it looks nice and flash. No reason to upgrade from XP though until you buy a new PC with it pre-installed.

Yep. There'll be folks who queued outside PC World yesterday to buy it now eagerly awaiting SP1 :PDT_Xtremez_32:

I won't be touching it for at least a year. Microsoft have a long history of turning out buggy cr@p and using all of the early adopters as profit making beta testers.::/:
I'll also be waiting for a hooky version, Bill Gates has more than enough dosh already and if it wasn't for the fact that I like to play games, I'd be using Linux.

With the laptop I just bought I get a free upgrade, will get the CD and box, but wait for a while before I install it.
Timely purchase of the Laptop, my main PC is very close to the end of its, lengthy and very upgraded lifespan.
Ive just tryed the Miscrosoft Vista Advisor to see if my laptop is compatible, it would want to be, its only 3 months old!!.
Anyway I ran the advisor but its telling me my Graphics/Sound & Wireless card needs updated Vista drivers!.
Cannot be bothered, I'll stick with XP!.
I'm sticking with XP, it seems to me anything new from Microsoft always goes wrong in the first year.
Best waiting until the first Service Pack is issued.

I beta tested it, it's OK. I agree it looks pretty but I won't be buying it.

Well, just to give it some backing.....
I bought Vista Ultimate the other day and installed it, and it's been fantastic!
What a wake up from XP even!
I bought it along with a new 320GB HDD and from fitting the drive and having Vista up and running, 20 minutes! It used to take longer than that to format the drive under XP.
I'll admit my machine spec is pretty high and kept upgraded (Gamer) so everything is generally compatible. The only problem I had was with the USB ADSL modem I had, no driver support, so a new router was needed, and it works fine.
I admit it's a bit pricey, but since I bought the OEM version, it's a lot better, £120 for Ultimate.
Start up and shutdown times are far faster than XP, the new Aero interface is a real bonus as it makes flicking through windows a lot easier, and it has lots of other nice touches built in.
There will still be some compatibility issues for some time, although some XP drivers still work. My Epson C62 printer installs automatically, although Epson have yet to produce a driver, my Zboard and Razer Diamondback all run perfectly and I've got the likes of Battlefield 2, 2142, Call of Duty 2, FEAR etc all running nicely.
When you register there are a few extra downloads ready which are machine specific and childs play and there is talk of a service pack already in the works.
I think that Microsoft and all other PC companies could probably liased a bit more to have everything smoother for the launch date, but I still recommend it as a worthwhile upgrade, even if you just wait a bit longer for more compatibility.

By all means come and try it out. BF2142 is actually very good. If you've played BF2, you'll jump straight in as the basics are the same, but there are a few nice suprises in it especially in titan mode....

I thought it was a lot harder to register OEM under Vista. Something to do with being pre-registered to a recognised system builder and the re-registered upon receipt by the system purchaser.
Tried reading up on this but my brain began to hurt.

I don't see any real problems with that, unless you go online and register whilst you are building the machine. If you can hold off the registration as it's not required immediately, then get the customer to go online and activate when they've got it it'll be fine.
As I bought it for myself, I just went on and registered and it was all completed.

Just remember as you settle in the cockpit, joystick ready, and just taking off....did you check your aircraft for C4 first???
Sorry, I've become a bit more devious with this trick lately as it adds so much amusement to my day :PDT_Xtremez_31:
See you there
The Vista upgrade can be a bit of a pig, for those thinking of it.
I did one this weekend on a year-old XP Home laptop to Vista Home Premium (my job now means I have to keep current with these things) so a few bits of advice:
It isn't taking the pi** when it says it may take a few hours
If the upgrade wizard reports some installed software 'may not be compatible', uninstall it before upgrading because you may not be able to uninstall it afterwards
Ditch any wireless network connection settings and re-establish them after the upgrade
The upgrade can be done in two ways:
Over the top of an existing installation, which has to be Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) certified
Clean install, which blows away the existing install so make sure everything is backed up
I wont be using it until it's settled down a bit.

I would agree Vista is brill but Where did you find Z board drivers for vista there is none on Zboard web site? But I got OEM version of vista ultimate clean instal, windows Xp what was that!!!!!!!! Though still waiting for Mcafee to bring out x64 update for virus protection. Many games had to be used in compatibilty mode for Xp Sp2 though, but that is no great shakes.
Been some quite heated debates about Vista on various other boards I visit.
Most people slagging it off, about drivers and compatibility and stuff, most of which are installed when Vista connects to the net for the first time.
Just a little Tip, if you somehow get an OEM Version, DO NOT try and install it over your existing OS. If it connects up to the MS server and completes the registration process, the CD key will be made Void and wont work again,

Glad I didn't do that then! The only real way to do a windows install is on a fresh clean hard drive, that way there's less to go wrong, and it's a great excuse to add even more storage...That's nearly 1 Terrabyte in my machine now:PDT_Xtremez_31:
I've not got any dedicated drivers for the Z-board yet, but everything seems to function correctly with the windows standard drivers, including the board swaps, so there's no problem.
I stand by my decision, Vista is good, XP is now thoroughly archaic when you go to use it again.
And did I mention the computer talks to you too? and you can tell it what to do! (which many of you probably already do quite often!!)

Vista might be nice for some poeple with new machines but a lot of the touted new features such as instant search and that lovely interface have been available on linux for over a year and a half now on Linux and Max OSX. For most people it'ss worth waiting until at least SP1 before upgrading oh and if your nice monitor supports HDMI connectors and deos not support HDCP you'll get downgraded video/audio.
The problem i have with vista is this: A computer is suppossed to allow you to do more with it, vista stops that,. The DRM technology present decides what you can and can't do with your multimedia content not you the user.
Oh watch out those buying from Dell, they are selling with home basic, for a list of the features and what version they are in look Here (http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/n/choose.mspx)
Sorry if this seems like an anti MS Rant but there are alternatives that are far more secure and reliable than windows.

I've just bought a new pc from Dell, it arrived yesterday with Vista Home Premium installed. I like it, admittedly the pc is fast but Vista boots up very quick and the sleep function is superb.

Couldn't agree more but unfortunately with the 'ease of use' that Windoze brought to the mass market - relatively cheaply - it's going to be a long time before OSX (even with Boot Camp) or Linux's compete in the home, or even corporate, environment until such time time as the same software base is available.

Your right about ease of use, having said that linux is making significant in-roads into both goverment and business sector for the lower cost of ownership.

This was based on a dell advert that has been running for quite sometime now, it states windows vista basic. Dell current TV adverts (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/tv/uk/en/fy2005_q3_consumer?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs) No intension to mislead anyone, For those that do want vista and you want the fancy 3D desktop your going to have to order at least the home premium. just remember check the link in my earlier post for the various versions available and what they provide. I wouldn't want people to get ripped off and that's why i have posted the comments earlier.

A lot of enterprises using it have actually found it to be more expensive than first thought due to costs in retraining staff, hiring non-windows sys admins, and support when using enterprise versions; the TCO difference is not that great.
Linux's greatest draw was the lower spec of machine needed to run it, but with kit so cheap now (and most enterprises recycle every 2 years) the peace of mind of having a very big support complex behind the software is what keeps most with Microstuffed.
