Fellow Goaters,
I am being posted to Brize Norton in Apr, and what with the recent media attention on the standard of Married Quarters at Brize, Mrs Ref is somewhat concerned
(That is an understatement, if she carries on I will have to give her a yellow card and send her to the bin!):PDT_Xtremez_35:
I would be grateful for any advice, pictures, or general advice on where to apply for and where not to apply for, also are they as bad as made out in the media?
Also with having a small Ref, that will need to attend school, any advice on that would be grateful.

I am at brize when I am in the UK, all I can say really is don't expect much, and you will not be disapointed. Have they offered you somewhere? how old is the little ref?

no, not yet, the little one is 3
Mate, do what I did when Brize was muted to me - buy your own place and get on the property ladder. Its a fookin slum.

I was told yesterday the plan is to knock down 600 Quarters and build 800 new ones in preparation for the "super base" and all us in Wiltshire joining you!

Mrs BEngO cried when she first saw our Brize Quarter - looked awful on the outside - a drab grey block.
But on the inside it had new carpets and fresh paint. The windows were big so rooms light and airy
what you make of it I suppose.

Thanks for that, it has made Mrs Ref, somewhat happier, she doesn't belive me when I told her that they are not as bad as made out.
But then when does a woman, listen to reason:PDT_Xtremez_42:

Of course there are horror stories, but people saying 'My quarter is actually quite comfortable' isn't really newsworthy.
The Brize Quarters look grey and horrible (as does Cartoontown) - but inside they can be really quite nice and homely.
OK..Igiveup

They are quite nice inside. Even the flats. I got made to live in a flat and then pay to move into a house, even though they had spare houses. (Flats not great with the kids-but that was DHE policy in those days)
Don't bother looking for a house unless you are the new Staish! Or one of those aircrew bods on free meals and rates.
You should be all NTL'd up too so no trouble with cable/broadband unlike RAF middle of nowhere.
There didnt seem to be too many In-bred people either (except Swindon Ha ha only joking!!)

I have to agree, i lived in mq's on upwood drive when i was at brize and admittedly they look terrible from the outside but i can honestly say that it was one of the nicest quarters on the inside... have lived in worse since then! tell mrs ref that there is absolutely nothing to worry about!...also DHE/MHS at Brize are pretty good

As a wife I can totally empathise with your wife. We were told horror stories too and I put it down to "just taking the pee" however when we came to Carterton to look around my first words as we drove onto the quarters were "ha ha very funny now really take me there", needless to say he werent joking and yes I cried.
However we looked around and eventually found a few streets that didnt look like Beirut eg Cranwell and Halton. We put these down as our choices but were infact offered a house elsewhere much to my dispair. I phoned up and spoke nicely (thats the Key!!!!) and asked if I could go on waiting list for our choices, they said ok and within a week we were offered it.
I can honestly say it is really nice inside, good size and in good condition. You may have a prob as you've only one child so you might want to consider Long Hanborough which is not far from Carterton, I believe they have some two bed houses there and that is a nice area, quiet but nice.
If poss I would advise you take a trip here asap.
Good luck.

Cheers for that, will bear that in mind when I speak to DHE. Have in fact 2 little refs, so I believe that I am entitled to a 3 bed house??

to be fair the inside of the houses are nice, it is just the initial shock of driving up to them that scares you. My quarter is off Faulder (spl) Road and it looks like CHAV city

We're just across the road from Gateway Primary in a nice little couldasac. Houses look like crap on the outside (looks like yellow corrogated tin above the ground floor) but fairly modern on the inside. Big garden and big garage. I've been in a lot worse (remembering Lyneham and Turnhill) and not much better.
Hope to move goes well for you.

We have just left Brize, had a quarter in Kestrel Close, not much too look at but comfortable ish on the inside with a large garden. Some areas more prone to vandalism than others.

Ha ha ha. I remember someone saying entiltled to DHE once. Apparently thats the wrong word as they dont have to provide you with a house. Its a perk of the job, a bonus but not an entitlement in any way!
And I've seen them refuse to give someone a 3 bedroom quarter because their children have been young enough to share a bedroom.
Having said that I think they have improved their customer service in recent years.
Just remember, as long as you are polite and not pushy and belligerent to the DHE(even though its a really stressful time, missus nagging in your ear, kids playing up, house in boxes, new job imminent, etc etc!) they seem to meet your needs.
Good luck with the move.:PDT_Xtremez_28:
If I remember rightly aren't you entitled to some warrants, claims etc these days to go view houses?

Thanks for all the advice folks it is greatly appreciated.

Am at Brize on my THIRD tour (none of which were asked for).
Have one of the old, brick built yank quarters near the bungalow's, same road as DHE office (comsec no names on web.....::P: )
Better looking on the outside than the concrete bunkers and very roomy on the inside.
Three bedrooms are huge, two bedroomed are bigger!!!! with a tiny 'dressing'' room off of the main. Down stairs is openplan. French doors to the garden (god i sound like a bloody estate agent) and quiet area.
Bathrooms even have a shower (missing from some of the concrete houses...
The concrete whilst looking ****e on the out are great on the in, a few are below par, but then so are some in civi street too. Roomy with great double glazing.
As to the ones shown in the 'TV expose' , perhaps the mingers should use Cimic Bang:PDT_Xtremez_32:
My missus likes it here, the quarter, that is... and she is one fussy SOD when she wants to be...
Hope she don't read this:PDT_Xtremez_15:

As you have been told, most of the houses are pants on the outside but quite good on the in.
Brize Norton Pre-School are very good for the young ones, and I have found Gateway Primary to nothing shy of excellent!! They found my son to be Autistic very early on and went through all the proper channels and have bent over backwards to give him all the support he could possibly need. Dont get me wrong, they wern't "Quick" to come to that conclusion, they went through a profesional, timely process, making sure they were right before coming to the final conclusion.
So from my personal point of view you will have nothing to worry about with schooling.
The Family affairs that Brize held throughout the year (summer doo's etc) are fantastic and the kids love it!!
Hope it all goes smooth for you.
P.S. One thing to bear in mind with the quaters is that the bloody windows dont lock!! which has given me more than too many scares when the kids have tried to commit harri karri out of their bedroom windows. In hein sight (dunno how to spell that) I wish I had asked for a bungalow. Try to get one with a shower.

The DHE/MHS staff at Brize are generally very helpful. Unfortunately, it's the kin eejits at High Wycombe who decide when & where you are allocated & I was one of those people who were told "that you're not entitled to anything, we don't have to house you"......this because I stated quite politely that as I was moving from Lossie in less than two weeks, the removals firm needed an address to enable them to plan their load schedule...(all went to rat****e anyway as they turned up after 2100 on the day of our march in, and we'd been there since 0900).
Just be prepared for obnoxious wife of wg/cdr blah-blah (at High Wycombe)stating all their rules and speaking to you like you're a piece of sheeite when you try to find where you're allocated!!!
The areas near the little playing field near the boarded up flats are prone to teenagers hanging around & getting ****ed, which can be quite intimidating to women during the darker nights etc...but in general it's not too bad.
Just to add, I moved from Northern Ireland and was issued a flat. I rang Brize DHE direct and explained that the dog was big and the wife was expecting (she later lost the babe)
Brize DHE were great at moving us before we even got here!!!
Their are a couple of S**theads in there, like the one who moaned that my wife did not at all look preggers..... Guess what I said???? LOL
Oh the joy of moving, You lucky lucky man...lol
When you find out your address PM me and I will give you a sitrep:PDT_Xtremez_28:

I moved out of my MQ at Brize 3 weeks ago, I want it back the house may have looked like and eastern berlin cold war block but on the inside it was huge with big rooms and a beautiful big garden. Now i'm in a tiny house with a postage stamp box garden, dangerous electrics, dodgy plumbing, mould on the windows and broken floor tiles (its getting sorted!)..........Brize may look bad but alot of the houses are lovely. Plus no probs about all your stuff fitting in.

Are you all mad?
This is my 5th camp and I've seen the MQ's at a few others! By far, these are the worst quarters I have had the displeasure in seeing and living in.
Look like Beruit on a bad day from the outside, marginally better on the inside, heating system which is falling to bits, carpets/paintwork/cupboards all sh1te.
Some good news though! take a trip to the family NAFFI or wait for a bus and by the conversations you would think you were in eastern europe.

You must have been very lucky at your previous camps. My current quater makes the ones at Brize look like 5 star Accomadation.
