In all my time at Halton, both Mech's and Fitter's course, I NEVER had anything from Peg's...but I did from the kebab van on the way back from the K & Q!

The cheese, bacon & mushroom burgers left blisters on the top of my mouth for days the last time I was there.

Burgers are not the same unless Peg is sweating over the hotplate.:PDT_Xtremez_34:

Fantastic post boozer grub, not only could you eat there the entertainment was free, we use to disconnect her genny out the back of her wagon then watch her 2 fat sons try and chase us across the car park. Bit like watching Jonny Vegas doing the 100m dash:PDT_Xtremez_31:

voted 'food of the gods' but then again I always thought doner kebabs were nectar from heaven until I made the mistake of eating one sober.

It wasn't just a van that sold something resembling food either...Hit it at the right time which was about 15 mins after closing time and there were crowds messing around and what not...This was my last ditch attempt time to pull something with a pulse...Worked a couple of times as well although the standard of 'lady' was low...very very low...I sometimes think these women only tongue tangled me to steal any burger remnants I had floating around in my spit post snack...

When I was at Halton 94 - 96 tapping at pegs was always known as penalties
As in
''Tap off?''
''Yeah it went to penalties but I scored'' (state name of thing and cringe if need be)

I lived in the block facing the main road and could see the kebab van from my window I ate them sober man alive that chillie sauce was hot
I seem to remember (hazy to much beer and nurses) that Peg had a second van for out side the nurses social on a night as well

When I was at (swings lantern) Cosford we, as a four man room, would send the smallest bod in the room down the to the kebab van that was on camp (on a parade square outside the big mess and classroom block)...He would take the duty boneshaker and our money and bring back a cheap white plastic bag of lamb based bounty...By 1930 we were generally starving so they tasted good even though we were sober...He had the 'special' chilly sauce under his counter for his regulars that would guarantee jelly botty with tears the next day...

When it came to us finishing our course we sent said small chap down there for one last time with our money as usual...this ritual must have happened over 300 times during our stay there and the kebab bloke gave us our last round for free...bless him the smelly turkish b*stard...

And no we didn't let the small chap keep our money in recognition of his untiring efforts in the field of kebabery...it was beaten out of him once we'd finished our donor delights...didn't want to spoil him did we?

Got to love pegs van o death

Hehehe, all the time I spent at Halton for my Mechs and Fitters course I never once got any of the squirts or vomiting sessions that people used to get after visiting the caravan on top of the hill. Used to always have a triple snot burger as well.

However, when I went back to Halton in 1996 for GST1 we went out at the end of the course and ended up at pegs at 01:00. There she fed me with the classic snot burger only for me to spend the weekend in bed after I got home. Stuff exiting my body from every orrifice at high velocity for 48 hours was mucho fun I can tell you......she finally nailed me.....bugger!

Pegs' is what makes Halton.

Bless her soul, when I went through TDF, she even used to let you run up tabs. (For the guys who were not so clever at managing finances.)

Never had a bad meal. (If you can call them meals!)

However, I was back at sunny Halton last year and found pegs daughter now running the show. Must admit, the burger wasn't bad and didn't make me ill, but it wasn’t as nice as I remember was a tad disappointed after a night of drinking holy water.

I honestly believe that Peg should be given a commendation by the Staish down there as, to be fair to her, she's someone who all the young AC's look up to, and does more for their welfare than anyone in the training system will ever do. Ultimately, they all look up to her and she does dish out some good parental advice to them.

Mind you, she doesn't do very much for their bank balances though as she is bloody expensive!

mechs course '84 had a bet with Peg over the outcome of the FA cup final between my beloved blues and elton's lot from up the road. Best burger I ever had. fitters course '89 - 90 it was a godsend on roving patrol. Chogy down the road got most of my money though.woke up many a morning with a tin tub and "beef in black bean sauce"over my jeans. Aaaaah the memories!

It didn't matter though did it? If you'd been on the toot then by that time of night you should have had a pocket full of shrapnel...This was/is dead money...already written off and spent so as long as you paid with this money the botulism burger was practically free...

We used to stop at the chinky after stumbling out of the rose and crown. Quick scoff of sweet n sour and then you find urself outside of the kebab van. Large doner (with proper grown up grated cheese no less!) and that would see you till nearly the brow of the hill at Maitland Square/car park. Then a Pegs triple with mushrooms and bacon.

I don't know/can't remember if we have any navy types on the Goat but if we do they'll remember their 'pegs' that was at Dryad...

I was on a course down there for a week just before it properly drew down and after a few gallons of real ale down the village with a cuple of submariners we wobble and swayed back to camp...I had the beer munchies but had resigned myself to starvation city until morning when one of them dived into a caravan tucked behind a biulding near the entrance...Inside was an oldish lady plus hubby sat around the caravan table reading the red tops...the two submariners got all misty eyed and hugged her and orders were placed...I got the biggest thing she made which was too big to eat...I had to dismantle it all lock out my jaw like a snake!

Same as pegs but you could sit in the caravan and eat and tab and peruse the currant bun as well...All for about £1.80 as well!

Oh yeah...same botty problems the next day as some from Pegs...still, got me out of a few lectures...:PDT_Xtremez_14:

HMS Dryad now MOD Southwick Park, home to the Joint service Police and Shiney schools.

And the green caravan of death still persists.

And in my opinion, that fat munter deserves the firing squad just as much as sweaty Peg.

Eurghh! (Shudders).

(Good cup of tea mind, and as you say, you can tab in comfort).

Thank God somebody else owned up to this shameful gluttony first!! Used to do the same thing, except we'd walked from the George (so we were obviously a lot hungrier).

Every time I've been back to Halton she's remembered me and the guys I used to drink with. First time was GST after a couple of years away and then again 9 years later.
Her first words to me (after 9 fcukin years, losing my hair and putting on about 2 stone) we're "Hello darlin' what do you think of the new caravan then? We do loads more food now but we've stopped doing the square sausages you like." She then went on to ask about some of the old course and also filled me in on details for some of the lads I'd lost touch with!! I'm now convinced that she is not fat, it's just that her memory is so large that parts of her brain have spread all over.

It was funny to watch (from a slightly more grown-up point of view) the way the kids responded to her, she was like a mum, councillor and best mate all rolled into one huge package. Over the years she has contributed a lot more than just food and salmonella to that camp.

BTW, is there anybody who can remember the days before she arrived? She was there when we arrived in 1990 and it looked like the caravan had been there for ages even then.

I reckon Peg's van has been at Halton since the place was given over by the Rothchild's, Peg probably wasn't there in the begining but it sure seems like that pitch at the top of the hill has had a 'food' van there for a long time.

Maybe next time I'm on night's guard I will once again partake of her wares (living in MQ's means it's now to far to walk to sneak a burger and cheesy chips).

Pegs, once saw all three of them get out of the van at the same time, now I was leaning on the counter and being 6'+ as I am, as the weight disappeared, the dame counter shot up, caught me right under the chin and the only thing I saw from that moment on was the night sky and the parade square as a pillow!!

Still the burger and fries as compensation, did the trick, till the next morning!

What's that all about?

In '94, Pegs did a burger called a "Dirty Great ******* Burger".
It was 4 greasy slabs of mystery meat, each with a fired egg, onions, mushrooms, and chilli sauce on top, stacked up and shoved inside a bap.
I was back there again in 2002 and she remembered me and made me one. It wasn't quite the same when sober.
In the late '90s, the airmans mess at Aldergrove set up a burger van outside the movers hangar, and they had their very own tribute to Pegs GluttonyBurgers. They called it a ScoobyDoo Burger, and I owe my current physique to them.
I have to admit, I too have partake of the Triple Whammy on the way back from the George in Wendover. I like to think of it as fusion cuisine. Chinese from the chinkys, Turkish from the kebab man, and god-knows-what from Pegs.

After spending 3 years at Halton it was amazing how many people went to the Rose & Crown, got totally hampered , struggled back up the hill to Pegs, bought a Pegs Burger and complained the next day that they felill and it must be the burger they ate!

Hold on; how about the copious amounts of Guinness/Lager/Alcopops you consumed in 3 hours the night before!

Get a grip!

For what it is worth, Pegs Burgers are and I'm sure still are fantastic post-pub grub. The kebab meat was most excellent. Long live Pegs!

I thought that she was allowed to stay there as it's an "open" site, with all the public rights of way that entails.

Her Garlic sauce was awesome, after one nite in the S&S I stumbled up the hill and drowned a burger in that stuff and managed to completely stink out Sec TS with it the following morning!! The WO was not impressed with AC TSP!!

When I was on my JMLC (2001) Peg managed to sneak a very large bag of chips and garlic mayo down to the airfield on the night of the exercise for me and the lads in the tent. S**t happens and we got caught taking delivery of said items at the gate into the airfield. The SNEC that caught us was that gob-smacked that he let us off as he thought it was a well executed plan........and we managed to keep the chips. Happy dayz.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

Just finished a course down there at Halton, and despite my best intentions, I ended up having a Pegs.

It was beautiful. A Cheese Burger with a side of Chips and Mayo.

I too am of the impression that as long as her caravan doesnt leave site they can't do an awful lot about her staying there. Apparently they can refuse to let her caravan back on you see. Cause its only a public footpath not a public road.

I remember pegs with great fondness.

Her double egg burger kept me going through the hours of sleep whilst I was hanging around at Halton on holding flight.

I heard a few years ago that she'd passed on to the great burger van in the sky.:PDT_Xtremez_21:

So imagine my surprise when I returned to Halton for JMLC a few years ago and there she was in all her glory!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Obviously I had to partake in her burgers just one more time!

Never did I get the squits from her fine fare. Anyone who did must have a very weak stomach.::P:

If they try and get rid of her Van off Halton, we will have to start another petition on downing street's website!:PDT_Xtremez_25:

I will bet 4 bags of chips and a peg burger that it will be closed pretty soon. The contractors will have their way and she will be out ... public right of way or not. Watch this space..:PDT_Xtremez_08:

There have been rumours about the location of that chinese for years, unfortunately I only found out after tasting the sweet and sour chicken balls! They may have been balls but they were definately not chicken!!

As for pegs, never tried it!!!

Peg Burgers kept me going on my mech course. Soaked up many pints of ale. Only downside was picking up the white napkins strewn all over Halton on a weekend for pi$$ing off the discips!! One Ginger barsteward in particular!!

Don't know when Pegs van first dropped anchor but it was there in all it's glory in July 1979.

Peg went to Halton in 1979?

She'd be at FS level by now!

Damn! I remember my weekly (or more regularly) Double Egg and mushroom burger with that bleached white pseudo-mayo (and another one to wrap up an dtake back to eat in the block. 3 years of that and I'm honestly suprised that my cholestorol levels are at normal levels, even 17 years later.

I went back 4 years ago on a Sy course and she swore she remembered me.

i was last there in 2004 and she said the same to me. However, what really freaked me out was that she said she remembered me as a young lad back in 1986 with my orange rank slides......which would have been about right.

'When I was' (Blah Blah Blah) an instructor at BET halton mid to late 80's I attended many a post phase ****up which normaly ended up at Pegs van with an Ultimate Pegburger (WMD). Once after teaching a course of Omani's (Non drinkers) I got merrily W@nkered on whiskey at the Cpl's club in the Valley, I was staying with my mate down in quarters and after staggering to his gaff I was shown to his sons room where I was to rest my weary bones. A lovely bed with a Postman Pat duvet cover. Stripped and into bed.. no sooner than the lights were out some Tw@tt started spinning the bed and I felt somewhat unwell. Timewarp ensued and I must have fell asleep but awoke later, laying on my back with my face and bare chest covered in Vom (partly digested Pegburger and whiskey/water). I honestly though my mate had come through and vommed over me, so I got up and put the light on only to see a perfect head and shoulder outline of me (in Vom) on the nice clean Poastman pat pillow and matching duvet cover. It looked like the shroud of Turin. Through to the bog trying to be quiet and not vomming any more I was faced with a sight in the mirror which can only be likened to Hannibal Lecter wearing that cops peeled off face..... again all in partly digested Pegburger....... The stuff should be banned. The mere sound of a burger van makes me want to puke... Never again........

Stay away.... at Halton no one can hear you scream.....

I don't think the Pegs van was there before the end of 1970 which is when I left having got there in 68, I am sure I would have spent money there if she had been, allthough in fairness in those days the amount of times we where allowed out was rare untill you reached 18.

First had a Peg's burger in 1986.

An experience that never leaves you, mind you neither does chicken pox!

I returned on fitter’s course in 1989 & again succumbed to the alluring odour, the final time I sampled the delights of her fare was in 2001 while on IMLC.

Peg's is a legend in her own lunchtime, long live Peg.

Ah the aroma of a bacon double Peg burger and the sultry voice whispering do you want mush and relish on that love?

Mechs course in 84 and fitters 90 then a suicidal return for one night only in 96 and a Peg burger sober, just wasn't the same!

Only ever used Pegs on Hockey trips to Halton and JMLC.
Must say always tasty food and never a sign of bad guts.
Peg's must be joined in the ranks by OZ's kebab van at Benson,
Barry's the Chivenor Poisoner and Cosford Railway Cafe.
All wholesome stodge post pi$$ up.

In the chilli sauce where else? Eati ng there always left its mark (in the bog) the next morning. Still went back again after 5 babychams the next night:PDT_Xtremez_09: Worked better than an enema!!!

That also rang true for for the burger van outside of BZN. The thought only crossed my mind when doing a stint on the gate and seeing the guy popping out for a pish.

I presuming Pegs is still going strong as I am off to Halton in a couple of months.

Ah Pegs, I can just picture the old girl now, slaving over a hot grill, me watching the beads of sweat drip off her onto the grill and sizzling before she slapped another burger on top of it.

Never had a problem with the runs from her place, although when I was last there in '04 for my JMLC the lads who visited the kebab van of death definitely had problems.

Pegs however cannot compare with the Bratty wagon that used to do the rounds between Digby and Cranwell (I think maybe Waddo too), unfortunately the guy who used to do it died a few years back, RIP you wonderful late night snack man.
