Rigger to Sooty (1238) and Sooty to Rigger (1239) courses have been running for a while now so fellow techies of either or both trades a few questions for you to consider. Some in the poll above and some to debate.
If you have done the course does this make you a split brain?
How many have not done the course for what ever reason such as OOA or can't be ar$ed etc?
Is it a few weeks on the pi$$ and chance to escape the wife or of some value?
I throw it open to the wolves to debate/discuss the merit or otherwise of multiskilling.

This may cause some upset, as did some of my goat comments regarding Mech ToSs prior to the great goat crash, amongst the higher members of the food chain in the morale vaccum but here goes. Despite the best efforts of some of the destructors to make the lessons relevant, you know who you are, they were pretty anal and pitched at utter retard (AMM/rigger) level. Why I had to sit through electrickery I don't know as I have no desire to abuse dogs. As for being used as a pawn in the PTI training programme, well that just took the biccie. In my ever so humble, and the majority of my courses, oppinion everything could be done at local level in the relevant trade "Q" course. The only enjoyable thing, apart from going home, was the chopping up of metal and taking out your frustrations on some poor helpless rivets. Thank fcuk we didn't have the bloke that looks like a fat and mentally impaired version of Sandy from the hit TV series Monkey for that.
It's pointless as I will have forgotten everything by the time I start to circulate in the real air farce again. Still it opens up twice the DWR posts in the sand pit. On that not it sounds like a good time to get out. Roll on tranche 4!!!!!!!

Complete waste of fecking time!
Did a split brain Q course and work as one on sea kings.
If anything the rigger to sooty course did more to confuse me as Cosford anally teach jag/tonka crap whether its relevant or not!
As fat lazy techie said earlier in this thread, stick the splitter training into the q course, you have to do a q course anyway and its more beneficial that way.
As I see it-it's just jobs for Cosford (or is it Saints? Ha ha ha!).
Oh........and I hate Cosford!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Complete honest moment here......
I did the course october 2005 (Fairy to Leckie).
After I completed the course, I got stuck in LITS cell.
My on aircraft work has depleted to virtually none.
Yet in October/November this year (with a big push from SEngO) I managed to complete the IP package with a series of breifings from the leckies.
I'm now X500 and all I have done leckie wise is change a PDU. wow!
And I'm still stuck in the LITS cell,
And I'm still trying to dig my way out,
And it's not working!!!!!!!!

Did the course in 05 and was given a full set of exam questions on my first day by some guy that just finished the course. Of course i had a peek and aced it ! So did the rest of my course.
I learned the following
1) The m6 is still a pain any time of the week
2) Just because im away from home it is not sensible to increse ones overdraft 4 times in six weeks
3) Those who can do - those who cant teach
4) Nobody cares if you become profficient in the new trade as long as you tick the IP boxes. (ie if ground run an aircraft for a rigger component change, and my name is on the job card i therefore must be competant in the system.)

In defence of the instructiors at Cosford, they are like the rest of us, they teach what they are told to teach and don't choose the course content themselves. If the courses at Cosford leave you a little disgruntled then don't take it out on the instructor, been there and done it and if you think it's easy try it for yourself.
Answer to the original question - no it doesn't make you a split brain, there may only be a few of us left but long live the brotherhood of the wheel

Tin Basher - Ask in your admin office Sgt B or the girls should know but its a simple procedure and occurs quite often - you cannot be forced to retrade however you cannot (since April last year) sign on or get promoted unless you accept multiskilling.
If a guy is due to leave at the 22 year point (or before), and/or decided he's not staying in , what is the point of spending time at Tossford getting cross dressed?

I did the Sooty to Rigger course a year or so ago, I'm glad theyve reduced it to 4 weeks cos I always thought it was a 4 week course rammed into 6 weeks.
6 damn weeks ****ing it up, abusing smallies, stealing road signs (ermm... I mean gizzets) and trying to dodge the SWO!
Dont get me wrong.. some of it was good.. some just an attendence course.

I was fortunate to do my Leckie to Fairy x-dressing course in sept 05 before I went to the Gulf.
Since then due to ARF, hot pit and all that pish we have had 3 times more Fairy jnco's than weve had canine copulators so 14 months on I still havent done my IP and to be honest I dont give a feck.

F#CK ALL apart from call us jumped up cpl hitlers, well my gormless sumpy retards, if it wasn't for us jumped up cpl hitlers here at Mong TS you lot would be doing the walk of shame back to your units as FAILED RIGGERS. We regarded as similar to dog sh#t by our management, and are treated like rancid vomit, but some of us try very hard to get you spazzers through and out of this turdis as quick as possible regardless!!

WTF are they teaching mongaloid sooties airframe repair for? The last time I did airframe repairs I was on a structures repair team, as the majority of riggers have never touched a file outside of Halton/Cosford and here at the rapidly decomposing Wilts Transport Base the only people who get any airfame repair work are the civvies. :PDT_Xtremez_37:
Well at least it may stop the sooties coming to the rigger desk whining that they "can't get a screw out, we a need a real tradesman to do it for us" :PDT_Xtremez_42:

As for civvies at Alberts house doing all the repairs things must have changed. When I was there the civvies never did work in theatre, down route or OOA just the poor hard working blue suits fixed things away from sunny Wiltshire.

Blue suits seem to fix everything away from Wiltshire except for airframe repairs, that seems to be done by R & SS or they limp the frame home and give it to the civvies as happened with one home from the 'ghan recently with a knackered underbelly from extreme rough strip landings. This place has changed recently, don't know how long ago you left, but the civvies are talking over, although they are mainly ex GEs and others who got redundancy (lucky swine).

OK - I'll admit it I'm having a thick moment here! - Why do you need to retrain to do your opposite trade in order to be promoted?
Apart from the hands on practical aspects wouldn't a credible pass at HNC/D level in a relevant subject e.g. Aircraft engineering or mechanical /electronic engineering...etc... etc... (Of which there are a lot within the technician brethren) cover the science, theories and other complexities of aircraft especially if these HNC/D's can be used for a pay increase :PDT_Xtremez_15:
The practical aspects could be carried out by swiping bits of metal from a BDR kit then returning useless picture frames and G-Clamps for marking to the old crusty instructor C/T I. N. Mydaylad at the No.1 spitfire MTU - RAF Weston Zoyland - or whatever!!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:
