Ah well, at least you replied. There I was trying to start a meaningful, relevant discussion and all went quiet. I agree, No we don't need it. Not really useful on the streets of Basra or in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Okay Complicated answer NO because -
Who's gonna be trained to service it we are a little busy at the moment to hive people of for all the requsite courses.
It's stealthy to a point but why bother when your opposition only has AK47's, RPG's and no effective radar
Composite structure very difficult to effectivley repair in theatre. (expedient repair not withstanding)
Very expensive per item what are we going to LEAN to pay for it.
Do we need a fighter against those who don't even have an airforce

If the roll of the fighter is to clear the skies of the other sides Air Force then we need fighters. This however presuposes that the enemy whoever that may be has fighters and is a modern-ish country with the infrastucture and the finances to fund either the build of fighters of their own or buy them in from another nation. So in this 21st century chaos we now live in who is to be this mechanised, organised enemy. The old soviet block is no more, Eastern european countries are joining the EU in droves. So no credible enemy air force within range to shoot down in the short term of say 10/15yrs. So I suggest we don't need JSF for the primary role a fighter should undertake. Politically we might need JSF to provide jobs in UK, Their airships could play with them and be snapped flying them, Airshow spotters will love them (All the new numbers to collect) and HMG might like them to show "real investment" in defence matters.
Money for JSF would be better spent on pay rises now, better kit for the guys and girls on the ground or even enough spares for the stuff we already have.
