Hello there.

I'm a RAuxAF Gunner and have found an AT (Strictly AT - No wings or anything like that) parachuting course (run by the military for the military) I'm very much interested in taking part in.

My question is, will the RAF Pay for, or even partially fund the course subs (almost £500).

Who should I approach about this and how soon in advance?

Cheers

BB

When I did my course at Weston there were four TA guys on it...This was some time ago but as far as I'm aware TA get the same freebies we do...used to at JSASTC as well (Gosport for offshore sailing).

Obviously ask the PTI's or just phone Weston direct...(only if of course they are still doing it at Weston and not somewhere else!)

I found that most adventrous training centres are under-subscribed due to people being caught up in the operational tempo...lots book dates for things then cancel as they are deployed as well so it's always worth talking to them direct.

With this op tempo business it also means that AT budgets are normally bulging so ask your SQN to see what they can do.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, it's not Weston. It's run by a VR(T) officer in Holland - open to reserves, regs and cadets.

Vim, need I even say how much I appreciate your help? Got that Wobbly issue sorted too.

If it is a properly organised Exped then you should be able to get funding through a SIF fund or through the Gym (I think this applies to RAuxAF too). If not go to Weston, not as sunny, but free and well worth it. I did the course last year and had a brilliant time

As an Auggie AC will these be available to me. I remember the PTIs saying we were free to apply for such things, but will the sqn OK it?

I should think you'd be entitled to apply for them, but then I'm not an expert. Best thing to do is ask, the worst they can do is say no!!!

Just be a cheeky chappie...pick up the phone and make a nuisance of yourself (in a nice way).

An instructor told me years ago that the Army tend to block book AT courses months in advance to tie in with coming home from somewhere or the ending of a major training period...they don't ask the boys who wants to do what so when it comes round to the start date they can't always fill all the spaces and often downgrade their requirement by a good number...

So, if you phone the various AT centres and make it plain that you are willing to travel at short notice to fill a seat for them should anyone cancel you may get lucky...Used to work a treat for me re. diving and sailing...
