OK then boys and girles..What “in your opinion” is the best part of a film sound track you have heard (…and it doest have to have hit the charts or be part of a greatest hit compilation)

E.G. here’s mine….From the Bourn Ultimatum…Tangiers (remember we are talking SOUND not visuals)

I reckon Hans Zimmer has it for the opening 10 minutes of Gladiator leading up to the cavalry charge through the trees.

I like Enigma's music from Harry's Game and the music in Braveheart- the film is sh*t but the music is great

Gladiator is good- does anyone else think they copied it for Pirates of the Carribean?

My favourite has got to be the score to the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit's Theme, Riders of Rohan and May It Be are the top three :PDT_Xtremez_28:

"She Caught the Katie", the opening to the "Blues Brothers" as the two brothers meet after Jakes release from Joliet. Then "Can't turn me loose" during which the brothers manage to trash a shopping mall whilst being pursued by the Chicago State Troopers! Excellent!

Vangelis - Chariots of Fire

Still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it...

Top piece of music that fit perfectly despite not being a period piece.

My personal favourite film sountack is Vangelis as well: Blade Runner. The music added a whole dimension to the film and IMHO is as important as the visuals to bringing the whole thing to life.

Another top soundtrack is Moulin Rouge (awaits inevitable incoming about being gay). The whole idea of a musical using re-worked "normal" music sung by Ewan MacGregor and Nicole Kidman really made me cringe, but the whole thing somehow worked.

If you're just talking about blinding tracks used in film then the list is a little different.

Stax nailed one with She Caught the Katie
First time I heard Welcome to the Jungle was in The Dead Pool (IIRC it was lip synched by Jim Carrey)
An one I can't believe no has mentioned yet; the theme from The Deer Hunter

Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries in Francis Ford Coppolla's Apocalypse Now
an absolute classic. makes me feel like blowing up people just thinking about it.

The opening title music to "The Hunt for the Red October" (Basil Polydouros).
The music where the torpedoes are running, ditto.
"Hedwig's theme" from the Harry Potter movie. (John Williams)
The opening of 2001 Space Odessey. (Strauss)
The music from Pirates of the Caribean.
Main title theme from "Battle of Britain" (Ron Goodwin)
(and the Spitfire theme & Fugue, ditto)
Burning Bridges (Kelly's Heroes)
"Over the Seas" (from the Sea Hawk)

I think that'll do.

I love that bit, mighty helicopters flying in with that blasting out!

Two of my fave film soundtracks are Full Metal Jacket and Lost Boys.

The "Some Kind of Wonderful" soundtrack mentioned above also includes some early Trevor Horn produced Propaganda (the bit where Mary Stuart Masterson is playing the drums at the start)

A personal favourite of mine is Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells in The Exorcist but who can forget Credence Clearwater Revival and "Bad Moon Rising" in American Werewolf in London!

This may be slightly Off Topic, but I got sent this link the other day.

The music's pretty 'period' but Eleanor Powell had a great pair of pins and her tap dancing was superb. Enquiries revealed that the drummer was Buddy Rich. (There should have been more of that IMO.)

It must have taken hours of practice to get it right. I read one report that when practicing for one dance routine, her feet were bleeding after the session.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6R8InADno6o&feature=related

Stay with it, guys, the dancing takes a while to get going, but it's worth it.

As far as war movies go, I don't think you can beat the finale to the Battle of Britain. Dowding walks from his office to the balcony to gaze at the empty skies over Britain and for the first time in the movie that you hear the theme played from its intro, starting very gently and buidling to a climax.
Its a superb movie moment at the end of a great film IMHO.

eYoERWmZdZ8

At the 'Proms in the park' concerts ewach year, where there is a Spitfire flyby, the orchestra plays the BoB theme from the beginning and the music, starting off with the gentle intro rising to a crescendo as the Spit arrives overhead can, if the moment is right, cause that little bit of grit in the eye feeling :o

That ending music was written by Ron Goodwin.
And you are quite right; strange how that grit does not vanish no matter how many times I see that film.

Another fave is Addagio for Strings. First time I saw Platoon, it fit so well that I though it was written for the film.

In fact, it's such a good piece of music that it still manages to sound good on that cheesy club version that some DJ vomited up a few years ago.

I aggree - a good stirring piece of composition

Off at a tangent - from the film of the same name 'Pretty in Pink' - Psychedelic Furs (i think that is correct but will no doubt be corrected if not)

Im another for Barber's Adagio for strings.

In addition "Whisper of a thrill" from Meet Joe Black is a really moving piece of music. To add that it is the first time Brad Pitt gets his kit off in the film has nothing to do with. :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Magic, whole lotta magic!

Mind you, the tune at the end of A Bridge Too Far is pretty stirring, kind of makes you feel as though Operation Market Garden was twenty times more successful than it actually was! Perhaps if they roll out "Catering ,Retail and Leisure" to it we would surely embrace Pay as You Dine! Time for a GEMS methinks!!!:PDT_Xtremez_19:

Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard - the Man On Fire main theme - very good

For pure death, guts and glory it has to be Wagner and Ride of The Valkyrie
The main theme to "Gettysburg" by John Williams
Schindlers list (piano) again by John Williams.

Let's face it here must be 100s, but I'm not going to list them all ! :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Nice to see a few John Hughes fans, my favourite is "Cant help falling in love" by Lick The Tins from SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL, just at the end of the film as Jones is walking away in tears and Keith realises that 'paradise isnt a pair of long legs'. (Heck i'm a soppy git), or just about any song in the film, great 1980's soundtrack

PS Anything by Whitney Houston, Bryan Adams or Wet, Wet, Wet should be disqualified as being ............
