yes - learn to spell it - Mt Byron
Very very exposed, I presume you're off in the summer which'll be the FI winter. Be prepared for 4 months of sideways snow.

F**k me, aren’t you two a helpful pair. I’ll bet Celtic Bhoy can’t wait to make his second post on the goat and get such a positive helpful response.

Is everyone averse to a bit of sarcasm today or what?Off Topic
Byron Heights was fantastic in 94 when I was last there, nowadays very personality driven as there are fewer people on the mountain sites. Eyes open, enjoy would be my advice!

Byron Heights was best site at the time I was there - funny, that...
Watch your welcome night. My (old) joke was at the expense of the Techies, enjoyed by all; Whats the difference between God and a techie? God doesn't think he's a techie.
For the rest of my tour though, my jokes and stories targetted everybody else, including my own trade - especially a pair of wanker who decided to trash another site.
Best advice I can think of is to just relax and enjoy it. Just roll with the bulls##t that comes from the flatheads at MPA!

Now there's a flashback, went up to BH in 92 to service weapons the only time they stopped singing that was to drink more beer !

Same here & Alice is much better & any of them is better than MPA. Although being invited on board when the ship was alongside at Mare harbour was interesting to say the least, not in a golden rivet type way I hasten to add.

I was down last year and Byron was a great place, apart from the DetCo who was a complete throbber.
I am due to go ooa to byron heights. Ive read quite a bit about how much people drink up there. Im a non drinker and avoid bars etc because of a drink problem i had several years ago. Can anyone give me advice on how my time at byron will be affected by this.

Off Topic Yeah - it'll seem a lot longer than everyone else's time.

Seriously though -- have you thought about mentioning this to someone officially?:PDT_Xtremez_35: It might be better to get this out in the open before you get there - rather than take the gamble that you can hack it 'dry' with so much temptation/peer pressure about.

Not the place to go if your a non-drinker. I would flag this up and try and swap for MPA or somit.

Was lucky enough to get me a few invites up for dinging in/out nights when I was at MPA 2000. Was brill even got my Byron name which I still remember but it is far too rude to post on here!!!
Defo not a place to go for a non drinker try and get a swap and I'm sure there will be someone who is not wanting to be stuck at MPA for 4 months who will be more than happy for the chance for a tour at Byron Heights.
Well, I'm sitting on the sunshine mountain (well, snowy, windy and cooooold!) that is Byron at the moment.
Yes, there is drink here, but we do have soft stuff as well you know. We're adults here noone is going to hold it against you if you don't drink the gogo juice. As they say here ' there is absolutely no pressure!'
Personally, I'm well happy that I'm up here and not down in the cesspit that is MPA. It's pretty chilled out here and we just crack on and do the job with none of the bull**** factor...however; if the very sight of a bar is enough to get you rocking in a dark corner somewhere then you might have an issue here as the Sheps Bar is the focal point of the site, it's our lounge and we spend a fair bit of time in it, even on chill nights.
Enjoy your tour wherever you end up!
Cheers!

That joke was as funny as getting your penis rubbed with a cheese grater!
i was also wondering whether fags are cheaper out there? and where you purchase stuff like that, is it a trip down the mountain? Plus how do you go about getting cash?
There is a cashpoint on the third ISO between Tescos and McDonalds...
Sorry, that was a joke. It is a very isolated site (have a look on google earth) unless things have changed you will spend the nights sat in the bar and will get your tabs and basics (shower gel etc) off the barman.
As long as you are happy to mix and have a laugh with the hammered, you will be fine. In fact you may be really popular as the full time duty tech?

Ok, this season, the fashionable dirty tabber on Byron has the choice of either Lambert & Butler or Superkings, it's a choice of two here! currently running at just over 4 squids a pack.
We do hold stuff like toiletries, boot polish and all that kind of stuff, but you're obviously not going to find a supermarket range of products here. I bought a shed load of stuff out with me to last the tour, but you can always either get stuff from MPA or get someone who is going down there to get stuff for you.
Money wise, bring a cheque book with you. You can cash them at the Byron bank (detco). I think most people bring some cash out as well.

Any chance of coming up in the next week or so, I'm down as duty tech for the next dining-in night and being sober is seriously gonna mess with my mojo!:PDT_Xtremez_17:

Sorry, that was a joke.
And you've now spoilt it! - you could have had Jenga wandering around Stanley looking for the Pizza Hut and Burger King!!!!!!

I returned from Alice early this year. Had a fantastic time but having sent our Snco Eng to the B site on several occasions the song now appears to be Byron boys are in their beds again!!! will pay a fine to Alice QM for using B word) Throughly enjoyed both mountain site tours I have done and I am T total. The arrival drinks and games can be done without drinking alchol just speak to QM on arrival. Take some money but you wont spend a lot, personally I spent about £100 a month avarage but that was put up by my R+R trip. If I had a choice of OOA tours again a mountain site would be top of the list preferably to Alice.
Be aware some people who came down ended up going to different sites than they expected to. 101 course is ok practical is at Portreath staying in a hotel.
All OOA tours are what you make of them enjoy it.
Once a JAFAD...

Holy sh1t I'd forgotten about the Byron Bus and "climb up Sunshine Mountain..."
I was there is '99 - happy days. Any of you manage to join the Breakfast Club complete with your certificate?
Byron Boys are on the p1ss again...
and ringing the Alice puss1es up to sing "Alice? Alice? Who the fcuk is Alice?" at them will live with me forever.
I even remember my Byron name and why I got it (I'm not telling).
Can't comment on the other sites but had a great time up Byron in the summer 2006 (there winter)
that was until the pongo's realised we shared the same internet connection as MPA and had full access to the PC's to add webcams etc went from broad band down to 16K :S could have committed murder i can tell ya
watch out for the cara cara's they got some balls!
watched a whole season of 24 over a weakend :PDT_Xtremez_19:
And i also couldn't repeat my Byron name :PDT_Xtremez_06:

I was in Mt Byron In Jan 1987, sadly i was with the Royal Engineers !! ( let the Pongo Abuse begin ) I have been trying to think of a song that was sung there, amongst the hundreds that were, that was to the tune of a Billy Joel song and started something like " We met as workmates, on falkland Island, We,ll leave as inmates of an asylum " or something like that. Had a fantastic time there and realised i picked the wrong service to join. Hey Ho.
Cheers
