Off to Tunisia mid March for a couple of weeks touring. I know there is a small museum on the site of the Mareth line down South, and one of Rommels command bunkers has been preserved close by, so intend to visit these. Also intend a tour around the 6 or 7 Commonwealth war grave sites, mainly up north.
Questions: Does anyone know of any sites of interest in Tunisia worth a visit (before Mrs Gandalph fills the journey with visits to local craft shops and the like). Also if anyone has a relative burried out there would be happy to find grave / take photo / leave flowe(s) on your behalf.
Many thanks...

If you are a bit of a Star Wars nerd they have Lukes place where he was brought up pretty much preserved....cannot remember where it is in Tunisia though .....saw it on an episode of Long Way Down.
Don't go to Sousse......tis a poo hole!!!
Happy touring!!

Southern Tunisia is very poor so your money goes a long way.
El Djem has brilliantly preserved coloseum.
The star wars sets are down South in the Trogladite area.
We went to Kairwan, not sure of the spelling to see the mosque and old city.
Carthage in the North has more mosaics than Rome.
I really enjoyed myself there, so have a good time.

The star wars houses are at a place called Matmarta. You can also visit the town that houses the tower from life of Brian, i think it is Monastir. A night with the nomadic tribes is money well spent, drinking strange brews under the stars in the middle of the desert.
Enjoy, been a few times and the best bit is when the locals realise that you are a brit and not German or French - they hate them.

Top tip take as much johnnie walker as you can carry as it costs £108 a bottle out there and they go mental for the stuff. I took some when iwent to Hammamet and sold it a souk for alot of goodies. if you dont take whiskey out there to sell you will regret it big time:PDT_Xtremez_28:
oh yasmine hammamet is nice but hammamet is a dump, always ask the price of a trip before getting into a taxi, keep an eye on any females that are in your company:PDT_Xtremez_25:

if you get the chance go for a ballon trip at sunrise over the dessert . It is a god early start but it is worth it.

Fly out tomorrow - thanks all for the very welcome advice. Trip has an added edge as found on the BBC News Website (World News - European Section) that two Austrian Tourists have been kidnapped by Islamic Fundamentalists in the southern area ( visiting the Matmatta area - home to Star Wars filming locations - high on list of places to go....DOH !!).
Thanks again for the info folks....
