Yeah, don't be such a burd and buy an AA road map like all real men do.

Off Topic

Seriously though, I was in Comet today and they had them on sale.... may be worth a look.

Pesonally I'd go for a Navman S70 http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=416690

i had a TomTom and didn't like it much. I'm on my second Navman now, and find them much better and easier to use

I got the Tom Tom one and love it, I then bought the europe maps from ebay when I moved over here to the land of milk and honey, well worth every penny!

Have a look at the Garmin range as well mate, they are well featured and look like good value for money. Unfortunately you might have to raise your budget another £50 or so though.
Failing that as S2 said get the Navman. Especially if it has Navpix :PDT_Xtremez_28:

I love my Navman, its idiot proof (no comments please, but even my dad found it easy then brought a TomTom and can't use it!!!) and really clear to use.

I have a Tom Tom One, and I find that very easy to use, it has to be with it being me using it.

I do use normal maps too but I found that even the newer road maps don't have a lot of the new road layouts and routes on them, whereas the Tom Tom upgrades do. Also my Tom Tom forwarns me of speed cameras, congestion ahead and gives a diversion within seconds. Also I can amuse myself and irrate my passengers by having Jane shout "please turn around" when I decide to re-route.

I did have a NAVMAN but some light fingered b@stards robbed me of it. Got a tom tom 910 and haven't regreted it. I liked it so much I even got the tom tom rider 2 for my bike.

How much did that set you back? Was it easy to fit and use?

Recently got a Tom Tom Go 720 (duty free) and the reception has proved very sensitive, it even works behind an anamorphic windscreen. The 520 has the same chipset but doesn't have Western Europe. They are both upgradeable via t'internet and have built in FM transmitters so that you can use your car stereo to either listen to directions, or to music from the built in mp3 player.

Gets my recommendation.

a bit Off Topic but can I get a satnav that I can use in the States and what would I need to do to get the right maps?

Have a look at the garmin range mate. They do extra maps on CD or you can download them on your magic telly straight from Garmin.co.uk :PDT_Xtremez_28:

twas a tad expensive at £399, piece of pee to fit, the scala rider head set (included) is really good but I went a little mental with the amex and got myself a bluetooth nolan ncom lid. Fitting was a doddle one simple lead to route under the tank straight to the battery, clamp on the RAM mount and your away. I'd definately recommend it :PDT_Xtremez_14:

I have a Tom Tom and a Navman. I prefer the Tom Tom as it's easier to upgrade the maps. Wish I'd got the traffic add on bit though (RDS TMC). Navman didn't like my scenic's windscreen where as the tom tom didn't bat an eyelid and picked up in seconds.

Whatever you get, make sure you can get regular updated maps.
I bought a "special offer" (pre-TomTom) and got one UK Map. They "don't do this unit any more" was was I got from Evesham micro (of whom I suggest you keep clear).

But it does look pretty on the windshield.

Good point there mate, my Navman didn't like the Ford Galaxy. The filament for the heated windscreen in the Galaxy blocked the signal.
You might want to keep that in mind wobbly and you gem, make sure it will work in your car if you have a heated windscreen and definately consider the Garmin's because the traffic updates are free.
Start HERE (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134)

THIS (http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=424927) is under your budget wobbly, but you could spend a bit more and get THIS (http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=416720) instead, there's a slight drawback, it cost £230 ! But it comes with free traffic information and free speed camera locations. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Gem as a rich retiree :PDT_Xtremez_31: if you can stretch to £320, comet are offering THIS (http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=401579). Full UK, Europe, USA and Canadian maps !

Well as Goatherdingsplitter will testify I am gadget man and have had a couple of TomToms but I recently bought one of my Lads a Becker Traffic Assist from Tesco - comes with full maps of UK & Europe and all for the princely sum of 89:97 http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.202-0652.aspx (they are over 150 on ebay FFS) comes with a 2gb card too.

I am (ahem) led to believe that you can crack it and get it to run many different types of software and maps of various exotic overseas locations http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AdyAMFzMLRQ

Im getting myself a Tom Tom Go 520 on pay day. Its got a great write up on this site

http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/tomtom-go-520-uk-and-ireland-description.html

and its got loads of extra gadgets. you may have to up your price by about £30, but from what i understand, its well worth it. The cheapest price i found for it was by looking on Google Products but someone might know somewhere cheaper.

Hope this helps :PDT_Xtremez_30:

How do, currently use a Tom Tom One (110 - 140 at the mo) and I am very impressed with the item it's ease of use and display options, have used a Garmin Nuvi and wasn't impressed with the options, more limited and not so nice to use.

As my wife has started to use the unit a lot lately I almost bought a Tom Tom 520 today from John Lewis's (£179.99 - 70 off), it plays your music integrates with the stereo and lets you make and accept calls and has a nice wide screen, seems to be worth the little bit extra.

Sat Navs tend to be cheap at the mo as they normally ship with last years maps, and you'll have to pay for the new ones pretty soon, I tend to update mine every couple of years, they don't change that much so it's not too much of a problem.

Check out the Tom Tom Web page for more info.

Might pop out this weekend and buy the 520 myself if I can convince my other half it's a good idea.

The John Lewis deal is for the music version so you can stream your Ipod through the system and onto your stereo at the same time (the music goes quite during instructions) Wife convinced deal will be done on Monday.

Check out Amazon, they have pretty good prices that almost match the duty free price point and a good returns policy.

No where near John Lewis on this item, always check amazon first, just in case, John Lewis are taking a big chunk out of this item at the mo, it the price in store and online so it shouldn't just be a local thing for Peterborough.

I bought the bread knife a TomTom One for xmas and she loves it. Dead easy to use with no fiddly extras. Nice and simple. Tried a navman but it wasnt quite the same.

Whichever you go for this site might be handy:

At the risk of being accused of necroposting, I thought I'd pose this question in an existing thread on TomTom satnavs.

I bought a TomTom One XL about three weeks ago and it seems fine. It came with a CDROM containing V1.6 of the TomTom Home device managment software, which I installed and all seems well. The software could recognised my device and added a few updates to it.
Then I succumed to the pop-up messages enthusing me to upgrade to V2.2 of TomTom Home and installed it. Uh oh, V2.2 cannot 'see' my device, even though the PC can and I can browse it using My Computer. I contacted TomTom and was sent a small XML file to add to a directory on my device and a assurance that this would fix the problem - it didn't.
Any else had or heard of this probelm and, more importantly, a fix?

Buy anything except for a Garmin....went out to see a buddy who's been posted to Naples and frankly it was CR@P! it was sending him to the right places, but it was using rules of the road for the UK....ever tried going up the wrong way up a sliproad in Italy????? NOT something i'd like to repeat again quite frankly, maybe it was Les,maybe it was the Satnav but i'd not like to try it again to find out!
:PDT_Xtremez_35:

Stick with the TomTom1 I used them for work and they are well worth the money!

They are like 'puters. They need the preferences setting up if they are to work correctly. A lot of peeps expect to take it out of the box and use it straight away.
Read the destructions and you won't have the problems.
I have a tomtom 500. No problems with the heated windscreen on my VW.

I got the original Tom Tom when it first came on the market. They supply regular updates and it's really got me out of the 5h1t on several occasions. May I suggest that anyone looking for in-car navigation looks at the Which? site here:
