I have just been pointed in the direction of Johnny cash and I am surprised as to how good he was, and one song that made me think cry now and your mates will call you a poof was Hurt.

I dunno what it is about this song but it just gets me, in the same way that Elvis did with his music. I can only say this guy is going to cost me a dam fortune when I go out and buy his albums.

Just be careful as not all of his albums are even good let alone great. Some of them are classics but when you make as many records as this man did that happens.

As a rule, I hate Country and Western but Cash is more than just a country singer.

His voice was unique, and got more interesting as he aged. Thanks to Rick Rubin, the guy did some of his best work as an old man and made sure a whole new generation sat up and took notice.

I've got all the American Recordings on my christmas list and any I don't get will be bought ASAP.

Bloody genius.

It's a shame Elvis didn't get the opportunity to do something equally dignified.

PS It's not gay to cry listening to Cash, it's music for MEN:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Johnny Cash is genius. Live at Folsom Prison is one of the greatest albums ever, and was the highlight of a career than spanned over 40 years.

Later in his life his cover of the Nine Inch Nails song - Hurt is indeed excellent, as is the rest of the covers he did on American IV. Dip your toes in the water with any of his Greatest Hits pacakages and check him out - you won't be dissapointed.

Johhny Cash rocks. He has one of those distinctive voices.
Have you seen the film Walk The Line? Based on JC with Joacquin Phoenix singing as JC. He done pretty good as well!

I like the dinstinctive voice thing. Frank Sinatra was pretty distinctive as well as Neil Diamond.

Deep Purple "mistreated" with David Coverdale on the mike.
An awesome haunting song which the mkII line up also did VERY well.
DC's voice and the twin guitars of Moody and Marsden just compliment the feel of the song so well. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I f you enjoy Johnny cash then look out for Glen Shirley. Johnny Cash discovered him whilst serving in Folsom.

Johnny Cash's music is fantastic. I love his song "I hung my head". Its such a shame when you discover someones musical genius after they are gone, the same thing happened to me with these guys. . .

If you can, listen to Johnny Cash's cover of Danny Boy always brings a tear to my eye. The Man In Black was a legend. RIP

As some on here will know I am a great Elvis fan (Presley not Costello!) in my eyes the man did no wrong! (admittedly some of his films were a tad ropey!) But besides the great man when I am in a melancholy mood or need chilling out one of my favourite albums is Pink Floyd 'The Final Cut' with the title song being my favourite!
