Okay, to kick this section off I will introduce myself.

Im a Sootie/Sumpy (take a look at the goatopedia for an explanation) who has been in the mob since the mid eighties. I have worked on Andovers, F4's (BFG) Tornadoes GR2 and 4's (BFG & St Athan) and C130K and J's. I have been studying for an IT with the OU for the last 5 years and have used the knowledge gleaned from it to make this web portal.

After a long discussion about ARRSE both Bitburger and myself chatted about the possibilty of me doing a site along the same lines. The name, by the way, came from a rag mag produced at our Squadron after a wind up with Lockheed Martin when we received our new aircraft.

Anyway, after a massive decline in morale due to everything thats happened over the last 20 years meant that people were more inclined to stay quiet rather than voice their concerns. That is why the e-goat was conceived. Its main function is to provide us with a way to voice our concerns and be totally anon. However, it seems to have become a Virtual crew room with all the fun and antics, apart from setting each other on fire. :PDT_Xtremez_32:

Anyway, thats a quick "me" and what ive done.........

Joined 86 as an 'old school' AmechW. Posted Coltishall Role/Gun Bay 'til '89 then bimbled over to Gutersloh to wiggle my round various sections in the Armoury until '93. Posted to Conningsby, was offered my fitters course whereupon I managed to mangle myself and my motorbike big time.

Was med discharged in '96 with dodgy hearing after healing all my bones! (nice little war pension 'cos it was sevice attributable) and now work as a graphic designer tooling about with websites mostly, living in Wiltshire.

Still think about what may hve been - constantly - but from the general 'feel' it's seems I picked my time well as 'things ain't what they was'...

Joined up Feb 92 as a DE L Tech/TC.

JT by Aug 93 and 8 years on TCW followed where I learned Data-comms, Sat-comms, beer drinking, smoking and how to disguise myself as a tree.

Moved to North Yorkshire with my tapes back-end of 01, after my eyes had over-adjusted to the green uniform, and built the IT network that they had before some fat-boy wanker took over and trashed it. All that work. :'(

4 years later and I'm a TG4 CIS-TECH.

I'm currently sitting in Lancashire in a pretty sharp suit, bringing new aircraft IT support systems into service, building web-enabled applications from scratch and generally having a bloody good time.

Might as well add my tuppence worth.
Joined in 89 as an A mech, went straight to Kinloss (Nimrod Line Sqn), then did a bit attached to AMF. From there went to 230sqn at Aldergrove working on Pumas and Chinooks. Some eejit decided I should do a fitters course, so off I went to Cosford, then from there to PASF at RAF Benson, managed to escape onto 33sqn. Then applied and got onto 28 (AC) Sqn on the Merlin.
Decided enough was enough, didn't fancy promotion into the same job I was doin and jumped ship after 15 years, commuted my pension and joined the police. Hoping to get into firearms or traffic after stint on the crime investigation team.

(Beware anyone from MT I catch commiting driving offences, not that I'm bitter !....Long story ) :PDT_Xtremez_25:

Marham, sh*t camp, great Sqn.
Saints, sh*ite camp, sh*te section. Very defenition of the word sh*te taken to new level by both camp and section. Wobbly joined the party a few weeks after me!
Bruggen, Quality what more can I say.
Coningsby, should have been better than it was (rocket Ron ran the engine bay like his personal unit!) at least you could get draught Wobbly at the Bluebell.
Bruggen, see previous, took up swish-fcuk.
Aldergrove, good time had Northern Ireland I can highly recommend, but impending changes meant I left at probably a good time, but it's an area I would revisit as a civvy.
Odiham, camp and area not as bad as previously informed but amount of pointless change and manner of execution means I'm glad I'm out soon!!!

Joined up in November 88 as an AMechW. Posted to Coltishall til 98 doing the rounds in the gun/role bay, bomb dump and then AMF. Did a short spell at Kinloss March-Octber 98 and then posted to Marham ( for some reason lost in the depths of time it was voluntary). Spent a couple of years in the bays til 04 when on promotion I was posted in to the NVQ cell at Marham (still don't know who I ****ed off that much to deserve it). But there is light at the end of the tunnel (and its not a train), PVR'd earlier this year (when there were no redundancies for plumbers in tranche 3)and get out at the end of this year. When I will be packing my bags and going to live the dream in New Zealand. Its a little daunting but exciting at the same time and I'm really looking forward to it. Somewhere in the middle of all that did GW1, Gioia x3 and Afganistan.

p.s. No need for people to carry any bags I already have a small army of volunteers.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

...when I will be packing my bags and going to live the dream in New Zealand.

Well, Plumber me old mucker, you and Mrs P will have to pop round for a pint and a barbie when me and Mrs Bluntend arrive in NZ. I take it you too are part of the mass exodus as well?

Right then... (Bluntend steps up to the parapet and sticks head over the top)

...I'm an EngO who was born when most of you guys were joining up. Done a few good tours here and there. Like Hogwarts BEngO, I was one of the unlucky ones who didn't get a PC so effectively told to sling my hook by PMA later this year. Fortunately, the RNZAF have made me an offer too good to refuse so me the missus, the dog and 20 cubic meters of our treasured possessions will be shipping out for a new life down under later this year (along with many others).

During my short yet rewarding career, I have always found the people that I have worked with (and often for) are what makes the job as satisfying as it is. I've had some great times with orrificer and oik alike and although sad that soon I'll be handing in this uniform, I'm happy with the way things are heading. This time next year I'll still be the same rank, still in a similar shade of blue, but in a part of the world that I'd never expected to end up (in a good way!!).

So anyway, if there is anyone else out there jetting off to serve in HM Kiwi Air Force, feel free to get in touch.

Cheers all,

Bluntend.

Joined Jul 79 as armourer, finished at Cosford round May Jun (ish) 1980

First real posting was to Honnington on 216 Sqn (Buccaneer) Was there for 3 weeks before moving up to Lossie as part of the advance for the Buccs moving up north....3 weeks being the total time spent posted to a camp in England in my whole career. The Buccs were grounded at the time, so when not unloading waggons full of kit we spent time working on the Hunters on 2 TWU, or the odd Hunter that popped up from Honnington.

Rest of the Sqn arrived as did the Buccs, not enough frames remained to keep two Maritime Attack Sqns on the go, so an airship arrived and told us all we were now 12(B) Sqn. Had 4 brilliant years working 1st line Buccs, proper armourers jet, left Feb 84 after returning from Op Pulsator (Buccaneers flew through Beirut, not over)

Spent about 8 months in the Armoury at Lossie (CBLS Bay)

Oct 84 got tapes and moved accross to the Bomb Dump.

Jul 86 Posted to 43(F) Sqn Leuchars, stayed there for 6 years, enjoyed working on the mighty Toomb and QRA. Sqn got Tornado F3's round 89ish sad to see the Phantom go.

Jul 92 AGSE Bruggen, fun time.

Jun 95 - Jun 96 Back to Leuchars, this time on 111 Sqn. Gen app for Germany quickly submitted.

Jul 96 - Jul 99 Missile Launcher Bay Bruggen, without doubt the best 2nd Line tour I ever did, good set of lads and family loved the MQ Site at Wildenrath.

Jul99 - Apr 06 Got 3rd and posted to Lossie on 12(B) Sqn, now with Tornado GR1B/4, but still one of the best FJ Sqns in the RAF and a great place to end my time in the mob.

Well then firstly it would appear that not too many previous post and i coincide - that can only be a good thing. Although theladf and I were on the same Sqn together (not that I know who you are unless you happen to be a tractor boy!)

So joined Sep90 as a DE DF

did Leuchars from Sep 92 until Oct 97 mostly in the bay. Moved to 14 for 2 years and 4 days at Bruggen. Then headed to St Athan for a further 3 years, where i got promoted and demoted in the same week! Spent a Glorious 22 months on 22Sqn at Wattisham before they promoted me for real and shipped me off to Marham. Where as a result of some moving around I now have the pleasure of sharing an office with the angry Plumber ( although not as much as he used to be apparently!)

Anyone think they know me then drop me a line - I am a lot mellower than i used to be! ( unless you get the poker dice out in the rugby club):PDT_Xtremez_28:

GOOD THREAD WOBBERS!!!!!!!

I look like Bruce Willis
14-06-2006, 09:31
1980 I joined the RAF, my outstanding abilities, and ATC experience meant that I was selected as senior man, I excelled in this position, even though the other childish members of the Flight, often attacked me, both verbally and physically, often when I was asleep. I would feel the thud of soap wrapped in a towel. However this did not concern me, as the DI's highly respected my ATC experience. I went on to graduate as best recruit.

Arriving at Halton for my Apprentice course, I was soon singled out, moved to single room for my own safety. It appalled me that there were people who were cheating in the exams, so it was my duty to report them. Fortunately they were removed from the course, and this earned me the respect of the instructors and peers alike. I was soon selected to be the goat handler, and it was due to my amazing organizational skill that this honour was bestowed upon me, the other apprentices thought this was a worthless chore, but I endured their juvenile drivel, because I realized their importance in the application of Air Power. I am proud to say that LEWIS (the goat) was sharper and better turned out than the majority of my fellow apprentices.

1983 left Halton and was selected for the Red Arrows at Scampton, My mother was so proud. Realising my technical expertise I was the only one trusted to be left in the hanger alone to polish all the aircraft, when the rest of the shift were at the bar. Obviously I was promoted on time in 1984, and found GST 1 to be the best course I have ever been on, But I was disgusted at the attitude and appearance of many of man fellow students, I stayed in at night to study and prep my uniform, they went to the pub.

1985 saw me posted to The Queens Flight where I found other people with the same standards and outlook as me, although I only spent 4 years on TQF it was my proudest moments and I still wear My TQF tie to Mess functions.

1989 to RAF Marham on promotion to Sgt where I was employed in the QA section, I enjoyed this posting, going around all the section on camp and trying to raise their standards to mine, In my time at Marham i raised the largest number of NCRs ever raised at an operational airbase, I was proud to be doing my bit for the application of airpower. The Gulf war came along and I was supposed to deploy with 27 Sqn to Saudi but unfortunately due to a stress attack I was downgraded and not able to go, still I was able to do my bit for the War by impounding all their tools kits before they deployed as they were not etched correctly iaw AP100B-01; thereby prevent a serious QA incident in an operational theatre. not only did they almost let their Sqn down but also the whole of the Coalition Forces.

1992 I was specially selected to run the LITS development team, this fantastic system, has made everyone’s life in the RAF easier, and is a true projection of air power. I asked to be removed from this job, after being punched in the face by a Rects controller from Lossi, who obviously did not embrace this new and wonderful technology.

1994 I returned to my spiritual home, that of Trechards finest, RAF Halton, where I was employed in the airman command school instructing GST1 students. I am proud to say that my students had the highest failure and suicide rate. This ensured that people only worthy of the rank of Cpl got through.

1996 promotion to C/T and a posting to 1 S of TT, Instructing airframe FT student. Can you credit it one long in the tooth SAC called me Chief, I explained to him that the rank was Chief Technician and I would be addressed by that. My post was in BET and I am proud to say that only the best got their test piece passed, the slightest deviation above or below 0.02MM on their FTJ was an instant RTU.
Strangely, I had few friends at Halton other than Norman who worked as a Civil Servant in stationary stores, well he was my friend until he too took a restraining order out on me and I was not allowed within 500m of him. This happened after one night I invited him into the Sgts Mess for a drink and after a wonderful night in there i gave him a friendly peck on the lips. He totally misunderstood the situation and I, As a highly regarded SNCo was asked by the CMC to leave the Mess. He also added " no f*****g hommos in here you weirdo" and again I was punched in the face. I was horrified by his attitude, given the RAF's EO policy.

2001 posted to Odiham. When Op TELIC started I was getting ready to deploy, when unfortunately a nasty cold made me unfit to fly for 3 months. The FS then approached me and asked if I would like to move to the QA cell, Although his words were something to the effect of " you complete c**t get the f**k off my Sqn and never darken my door again" Obviously I reported him for this, and for the assault that took place shortly after, and I was horrified to discover that he has recently been made a Sgt again.Around this time I was surprised to read in the RAF news(which I subscribe to) that my Halton apprentice entry had had a 20 year reunion, I never received my invite, and can only assume that the poor quality postage system at Odiham is to blame. In the QA cell at Odiham, I managed to charge 6 So called NCO technicians on 18 sqn, who were carrying illegal tools in the form of gerbers and leathermans, as they prepared to embark to Iraq. My swift action in dealing with this potential loose article hazard, in a combat zone, probably changed the course of the war, However OC 18 Sqn instead of applauding me for adhering to regulations IAW the JAP; arranged a posting to me to the LEAN implementation team at High Wycombe; also he punched me in the face.

2002 at the LEAN implementation team I was instrumental in bringing into service, many of the lean improvements that have made a massive improvements in the application of air power at placed diverse as Lyneham, Wittering and Marham. These improvements have done much to improve moral in the air force, however, strangely, the technical world are so resistant to change that they are not embracing these vast improvements as they should. For example when I visited the 'Pulse' line at Cottesmore I was surprised to be punched in the face when I said this was all my idea.

2005 saw me posted to the Pavilions at Wyton, I would love a posting to Cosford to work as a Modern Apprentice Co-Coordinator, as I feel I have a lot to offer in maintaining standards in the modern RAF.However, under the terms of one of my restraining orders I am not allowed to work with young people or women.

Another tuppence thrown in.

1991 Swinderby and Hereford for walking straight and staggering sideways. Then to Uxbridge for 1st tour.

Then to Bouncy Castle for 4 yrs. Followed that with 3 yrs of Scopie hell in the wilds of Jock-land. (I was happy, as it was my first back home tour).

Left there with those funny V's on my shoulders to currently play Drs and Nurses at that secret base in Wilts! :PDT_Xtremez_21: Now looking forward to 3 yrs in Eppy.

Well, potted history

Joined Aug 83 as L Tech AR
Went to Cosford and discovered women and snakebite
Left Cosford as L Mech AR in Apr 84 to Kinloss - C Shift, NLS (in the days when there was only 1 line!)
Fitters course 87 - 88 and then for some reason got posted to........ Cosford TMEC!!
Did that for 9 months then got conned by Chas Davis to exchange to STCAAME at Valley - Quote "Loads of time on the line here, none of that bay crap!" Gullible idiot I was and took him up on the exchange!
Stayed at STCAAME until Jan 96 then 14 Sqn at Bruggen. Ex missus threatened to divorce me if I stayed on sqn so got exchange to ASF. Good move (apart from missus didn't divorce me! That came later)
Back to Cosford in 99 as instructor down on the airfield(14 years a cpl - long story involving a RAF copper, a hangar party and the station commander!)
Feb 04 back to 1st line with II(AC) at Marham as singly fairy snec. Didn't stay single again too long, got myself a new young lady after about a year! Won't say too much about her though, great girl, but dad's a VERY senior Rock and would kill me without breaking his stride!!! Still there now but looking for a civvy job.

Strictly cold war warrior out before the wars started.

Served my time on Phantoms and Buccs, with 2 short stints in missile city finished as Cpl on 228 at Coningsby where it all really began in 1973

Was A mech W trained at Saint Athens, fitters course at Halton. On the last weapons course to pass out of both camps in a weird coincindence.

Here strictly for the humour and nostalgia because I don't understand all the admin crap and peronnel stuff any more. Looking at the way you lot are getting sh!t on by the politicians for the first time since getting out I am glad.

Now on my second time in, having done a short stint previously but didn't like civvy street so came back for more!

Joined Jan 83 - Swinderby for the second time in 3 years!

Mar 83 - Hereford for basic Admin Clerk trade training

May 83 - Greenham Common. Sqn made up of half rocks + half yanks, all there to keep those CND wimmin from getting their hands on the nukes.

May 85 - Back to Hereford for conversion trade training to the old-fashioned P&A Clerk (pre-SAMA, for those who can remember such days).

Aug 85 - Odiham. PSF, then short stints on 7 & 33 Sqns.

Aug 86 - Wildenrath. Initially with the 92nd spitting cobras, until promoted and moved sideways to the sister sqn - the 19th flying dolphins.

Aug 90 - Hereford yet again, this time as an instructor on Sec TS.

May 93 - Halton. Still on the school, as Hereford had just closed. Was not impressed at being posted from the best UK posting location (IMHO) to the worst (IMHO again)!

Feb 96 - Leeming. Nice to get away from the training environment and back on a 'normal' station. Also, last time I wore uniform on a regular basis (see below).

Jul 02 - Athens, Greece. Hardship tour in the British Embassy, all the ferrero rocher you could eat and lots of cocktail receptions to attend - and on top of that, the Olympic Games too! As you can imagine, a rough tour.

Dec 05 - Guatemala, Central America. Current location, and still working in the Embassy world (dunno how, because I haven't got a diplomatic bone in my body). Nowhere near as cushy as the last post - lots of stinging insects, all the choccies keep melting in the heat and the beer tastes like p1ss! Still, keeps me out of the UK, which is always a good thing.

Lots of living in hotels (and a few tents) in between. Just waiting to see if my name comes out of the latest redundancy lottery, as I am halfway to being a civvy now anyhow!

Hi all,

New member, first posts.

As the name implies I am one of the RAF's best kept secret (either that or no one want to admit to us) the mental health nurses.

That identifies me way too much so that is all I will say.

Postings wise I was one of the many afflicted by the curse of DKPH spending 4 1/2 years there and had they not closed the place I think I would have ended up there for the full 22!!

Well hope to keep watching

Only just found this thread and been here a while, so...

Mar 79 - Swinditz for Private Pile
Apr/May 79 - One of god's chosen, AMM77 at the Rothschilds
Sep 79 - Conz ASF doing Tomb Minors - hello 'rhino'
Aug 81 - Conz VASS, mainly subsidising Dad's Army Flying Club beer calls (*******s!)
Nov 82 - Gut, 230 Sqn Pooma's (woohoo!) cos I wasn't on the FT board - so why did the ****s give me FT in Jan 83? ::/:
Nov 83 - Short toured to Rothschilds for FT
Jun 84 - Shawbury on Guzzles, bored sh!tless as you can only do so many tailwashes when they're not flying (most of the time)
Jun 85 - Back to Gut (woohoo again!) but as a plastic rigger in the Hyd Bay, but went camping with the leaping heaps as a mobile tyre bay (f**k of LAD, we don't do vehicle wheels!); got me tapes in 87.
Jun 89 - Wat-a-sham, and it was! 74 on REAL Tombs, followed by 74 on expensive UK copies; at this point the brakes go on career-wise (my fault, my attitude) - hello 'Billy Whizz', 'tonibaloni' and 'Offeh Kit'
Oct 92 - 51 (sshh) on recce 'rods, lots of det's to Italy's West coats and what was the cushiest time in the mob - nearly forgot I was in!
Nov 93 - Laar-parts, Pooma's again (2nd Line) - wotcha 'Rigga'
Jul 97 - Colt, the best kept secret in the RAF, 54 Sqn for 2 years then AMF for final 2 - hello 'I_look_like_kevin_cosners_brother'
Mar 01 - Final posting to civvy street

Oh, and somewhere in there 'the_crab' and I probably crossed paths.

Have been working for those who will 'quote you happy' for the last 5 years doing IT, due to leave on redundancy in Feb next year (voluntary) and will be moving into the whoring world of the contractor market.

80-92 - Wittering on real Harriers. 233OCU and Hams instructor
92-95 - Tasf/Vahs Akrotiri - great life but as a Vahs most boring job I've ever done, anywhere ever
95-2000 - B Line Lyneham. Great tour, loved Lyneham and those big trucks :PDT_Xtremez_30:
2000 - 2004 - Cosford TMTS (no wait, that was the most boring job I ever had, and AFTS)
2004 - Out, had enough, byezee bye, good luck to the rest of you

Why propersplitbrainme? Well I wasn't one of these plastic ATMs wiv a 3-4 week cross dressing course, I was a proper splitbrain me.

The sad story of me!!

1. Swinderbubble - March 84
Halton - Leave AFTS as a Rigger - Mar 85

2. Lossiemouth - 85 to 86 -The rigger bays, mostly as structures bay, Bucc di-electric panels, fish tanks and raft building. St Mawgan Conish pasties with 208 & 12!!!

3. 431 Bruggen - three years of Germany too early!! Munich = 3 weeks and £2K. More metal bashing. Lots of time in Gut's Mally. Leave Jul 89 for more...........

4. Metal bashing in the UK with RSS at Abingdon (not my choice!!!). Spend most time in East Anglia. popular destinations Witt, Marham and Colt. BDR king of Dahrann with Tonka "DH". Don't want to go to Saints, so......

5. Exchange to Colt!! As Ex Erk says, best secret!! 4 years of learning the rest of my trade. Great bunch of blokes on the best 2nd line Jag team. Goes wrong with a move to the team of death>>>

6. Move to structures Bay, biggest mistake of career. 4 years of crap and career put on hold, end is better with a short move back to a team, become Ex Erks paderan learner!!!

7. Change of carreer - go to Cottesmore, 2nd line bays. Career back on line. hit the start of LITS in the HF world, hey I know that rubbish. Year on VASS, its OK! Back to bays and on to Structures again. See how a structure bay should be run!!!! No boats, but lots of LEAN.

8. Last tour city, wife wants it, back to Colt. I want a Sqn, get the one I didn't really want!! TM is not my greatest fan (para 6 refers), get LITS, face the trials and become master under Yoda, get 3 Bananna, not on last tour anymore!

9. In the Cabbage patch with the dying felines! Career crossroads just ahead!!:PDT_Xtremez_19:

I am currently working as a Personal Trainer in a Virgin Active Health Club in Sheffield, but I have also worked for Fitness First, first as a PT/PT Manager and then as a Regional Fitness Manager. Went back to PT cos I couldn't stand all of the management cr@p and all of the driving I had to do (500-1000 miles a week looking after 16 health clubs).

Took the Queen's Shilling in October'75. She changed her mind and tried to get it back.

75 and I'm at Swinderby for the marching and beasting bit.
75-78 doing my time at No 1 SofTT Halton for the trade training, more beasting, and a surprise stint as a firefighter with the Green Goddess.
78-83 and I'm on "Trembling One" and the Mighty Toom, at the RAF's premier QRA base in Scotland.
83-88 now it's SAR, 22 at Leconfield with Walter the Wessex.
88-90 still SAR at Leconfield but 22 becomes 202 and we change our Walter's for Sea Kings.
85-89 sees a couple of trips to the FI, and it's Sea Kings at Navy Point then 78 at MPA.
90-93 It's Valley now, SARTU to start with, then to 22 for proper SAR, back with good old Walter.
93-93 Loaned out to 22 at Coltishall for 6 months, vow never to go back to Valley.
93-95 Change of pace, and it's "Tatty Ton" at Finningley with that superb little dinky jet.
95-97 Something completely different, the L.I.T.S. Project Team at Henlow and Coltishall.
97-00 Northern Ireland and 72. Back with Walter for the last time, plus that anglo-french thingie.

Finally gave the Queen her shilling back in 2000.
PVR'd cos I was coming up to tour-ex, and the dafters wanted to send me to Saints. NO F**KING CHANCE

Best Squadron - 72 at Aldergrove :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Best Tour - 100 Sqn (All those Dets incl Cyprus, Gibralter, Norway ) :PDT_Xtremez_30:

found this site 2 days ago and wish it was here when i was in the mob.
joined 78 A mech P swinderby to be educated in all things blue, next to halton for education in all things oily, next to cranwell for the start of the education on how to cope with hangovers, learnt that using aircraft oxygen gave short term cure to the beating head, next was 4 years at 431MU Bruggen where i found that the best way to avoid a hangover was to stay drunk. next conningsby on the mighty toom's, found out a couldn't afford a hangover anymore, back to halton to be an AtechP, found that i could now afford a hangover again after halton, so spent 8 years at Lyneham in AES having intermittant hangovers untill 92 when i was medically discharged, so now i am a war pensioner with no restriction on my health(I guess the quacks got that wrong then) I am still in aviation with A,B1,B2&C easa licences working for a cargo airline in the midlands.
All the best for the future of the web site

Might as well list where I've done for a second time (First attempt got wasted in the hacking attack at the start of the year).

Joined Nov 83, Swinderby

Locking Jan 84, Direct Entry Air Defence (Term JAFAD not yet invented then).

West Ranyham Jul 85, Bloodhound Missile Servicing Flight until the AR's took over, got two stripe on time.

Bishops Court Jul 89, Good Money, Top Shift, Crap Camp, CO from hell, Mad Collie, got Mortered, got a gong, shut camp and got posting I didn't want.

144 SU Wattisham Nov 90, most of it spent at Portreath, before moving to...

114 SU Ty-Croes Jul 91, good bunch of lads, crap bosses, it was in North Wales hence overall it was crap. Unit closed Dec 95 (best unit do I've been to ever, though I'd jumped ship to....

Locking Jul 95, first six months brilliant, then took a job in course design, big mistake, put in for Outer Islands as I didn't want to go to Cosford. Benny posting and course dates set, then cancelled, hit with the Falklands just when Locking was closing. Offered 1ACC, TCW, Cosford or Spadeadam, let me think about that for 1 microsecond....

...Spadeadam Jan 99, quick not so jolly down south, then SA-8 on GAFE, loved the job and camp was alright, just about settle down there when hit with a T93 Course, Chief asks why I'm doing a 93 course...I reply, most likely I'm going to....

Saxa Vord Mar 00, Mission on the tour, save as much dosh as I can and get my posting of choice at the end of it, both missions completed with a posting 18 months later to…

Neatishead Sep 01, Long course at Cosford, Got to do a chief’s job as an acting three stripe/Cpl. Watched Neat get wasted as a CRC, bit of time on the 93, followed by my third and 18 months as SNCO Eng Co-ord and now to…

Henlow Apr 07, Working on the road for a bunch out of Warminster on a joint service training team.

DWR’s

Byron Heights (7SU) Oct 88 – Mar 89 – best OOA
Mt Alice (751/303 SU’s) Feb – Jun 99 – should have been a lot better than it was
Al’s Garage PSAB Dec 02 – May 03 (got a clasp and a gong for that one), ruined by Telic, no R+R.

Six month Bloodhound Q course at Newton as well in 86 (best six months of my career those).

Not as indepth as some... not mentioning any names...

April 96 joined the mob as AV Mech (T)...abuse to follow---

Feb 97 first posting to TTTE Cottesmore A'Shift servicing the mighty swingwing dagger of death, very busy and fantastic time.

Aug 97 too good to miss 14 Squadron RAF Bruggen very very drunk best posting ever.

Oct 98 RAF Cosford fitters course ETAV 45... 18 months of mind numbing.

Mar 00 Air Comms Bay Kinloss fcuking hated it SGT a complete arseh0le.

June 01 Exchange to NLS A'shift Kinloss many many dets mainly sandy hot places, but the lads make that place unforgetable.

July 03 Moved to AMF Kinloss on promotion.

June 05 PMA Volunteer trial scheme to 7 Air Assault Battalion Wattisham fixing AAC Lynx, but never actually touched a Lynx in 12 months. Hence the move by the Trade Sponsor and Strike Command to:-

June 06 After much fcuking around by the Pongos moved to 4 Regt Army Air Corps at Wattisham fixing AAC Lynx where we actually did work with the Pongos. It was just like any first line posting with the occasional exercise on Salisbury plain.... nice

June 07 After being given the choice between Marham and DCAE Tossford I chose Tossford... and not regretting it YET....

My turn then.....

Joined Jan 83 - Swinditz - 11 Flt

Feb 83 - Sept 84 - Cosford - started off in TAR DE 63, wasn't very good, back coursed to TAR DE 67

Sept 84 - Coltishall - there for 1 month working in Eng Wing (no-one seemed to know anything about me!), when I was told, 'hey you're AWOL and Marham are looking for you!' - Seems Innsworth sent me to the wrong place!

Oct 84 - Mar 86 - ARSS bay - I kid you not - the Victor radar bay (Green Satin, Tacan etc) was called the ARSS Bay!

Oct 85 - Jan 86 - Ferranti Edinburgh - Tonka Nose Radar course (2nd line)

Mar 86 - Nov 87 - Bruggen (Yay!) TNR Bay - (boo!) what a sh1t hole - I hated it.... got a move to 31 Goldstars following an unsuspecting DE JT getting posted to the bay straight from training. After working out he was an extra body and over the manning establishment, I asked for and got moved (relief to my CT etc - who fcuking hated me) before the management had worked out the same!

Nov 87 to Mar 90 - 31 Sqdn Goldstars - what can I say , except outstanding! Schnellies, RoeM, Shoarmers, Rhein in Flames, etc etc etc.

Mar 90 to demob Sept 92 - Wyton - Canberra ECM Bay and another career low point - what a tip and full of tw@ts. Entire Bay blokes were forced to clean the floor by scraping up all traces of the lino-polish with stanley knife blades, to allow the civvy cleaners to be able to do a good job! Oh! how we nearly mutinied - in fact I was accused of the very same, so couldnt wait to get out!

Sept 92 - Mar 94 - BAE Saudi - mega bucks and sand!

Now settled in a good job, close to a major Swing-Wing base in Norfolk.

There's no doubt I had a blast in my short 9 and feel grateful that I did my bit -even it was drinking beer and claiming for every home to duty mile I could.

I feel for and appreciate just what you lot, who are currently serving, are up against - pish management, sandy locations etc and being treated like cnuts by cnuts. There is life outside - just make sure you keep your heads down long enough to experience it first hand!

Just thought I'd say hello :)

Here's a little about me.

Joined June 85 and went to Swinderby

Trade training as a DE Flight Systems Tech on TFS-DE94
6 months at RAF Locking ( oh my what a holiday camp... PTI's with beer bellies !!! )
12 months at RAF Cosford ( Oh my, what a shock after the slackness of Locking... PTI's from the SS !!!)

Posted to Wattisham in Jan 87.
Worked in AES ( flight Systems bay )
some short secondments to both 56 and 74 Squadron

Finally decided in May 89 that since the trade was 100% over-manned after the Russians gave in, filling sandbags as a profession wasnt too enticing, I'd PVR. At the time I held the record for the shortest PVR on wattisham for a techie. 1 month from handing in the papers to exit. I didnt even have to go to the Falklands !!! That record was broken shortly after by a mate who got out in 3 days. :(

Been working in IT ever since and now work for a big bank in London.

Lots of fond memories, some not so fond.

Best times would have to be the two basketball tours I went on around the RAF Germany bases and an 8 week detatchement to the Island of lurve ( AKA Cyprus ) in the summer of 88. Ohh. And all the volleyball outside the bay at break times.

Does anyone esle miss the smell of aviation fuel ? ? ;)

Sammers.

Another auld git here; I probably LEFT before Kit or ShoutingWind could walk !

Joined as an old style 2yr crap app at Cosford in May '70, posted to 43 at Leuchars for some real-life education, and it was an eye-opener - brilliant. REBUILD THE WALL !! Then to Wattashame in Jan '76 to build up the MCS bay before 56 arrived, got an exchange back to 43 after 7 months then to Wildenrath MCS bay in July '77 for a couple of years. On to LSSB at Lyneham till 83, including Ascension during May/June '82. Leuchars again with 111 for a year and onto 43 as a snec for three more years. Pvr'd in 87 cos I'd had enough crap, and ended up with BAe in Dhahran Laser shop until 96. Worked for C & W as a systems engineer until downsizing removed the job, and now running a secondary school's network. Aiming to retire to the sun in a year or so 'cos the loonies are running asylumUK.
All I'll say from reading the pvr forum in rumour control, is that nothing really changes. The jobs still get done because we, or you now, are too good to let the side down. It would be like an admission of failure, aka reading instructions on an Ikea box.

Remember, if flying was difficult, the groundcrew would do it !

Plus ca change plus ca la meme chose.

But the people are much the same!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been watching & reading for some time so here goes:

1979 SWINDERBY
1980 AAD 62
1981 27 SQN
1982 TWCU(To Work Continuously Unrewarded - sounds like all the Services do these days)
1984 31 DES & SQN
1988 XV103 (on jacks) BASE HANGAR
1989 VIP ROLE
1990 14SQN
1993 10 SQN SAINTS(WHERE ELSE)
1996 VCTMS (TRI* GE's CRSE)
1997 2-16 (Didn't go global but.........tried hard)

On terminal Leave on/around 9-11 - couldn't have planned it better!!!!!!!

I do miss it - even Saints was a good crack looking back, with the Weekly Snecks Bar Member Duties to break up GR1 Majors. It's a shame what it's all turning into - all that experience and effort wasted or lost more to the point.
I still watch the board's here in Gaddaffi's Back-yard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like I said, different Sand-pit, but same people! Fortunately, 330's & 744's need very little work - just a squiggle here & there - much like 2-16 - hush my mouth - I *kin hate EK and QTR PAX planes - those dirty f****** in the back looking for 090* - mind you the Spoooons are very nice - maybe 2-16 could hire in a few to spice up the Gulf & Afgan Rangers.

90 Det to 10 sqn B shift at Brize on Op Granby. VC10s.

91 Lossie Vass. Loads of different a/c, loads of volleyball, and loads of fire related tomfoolery. Space hoppers, Charlie baiting, Smurfs ar$e. Doesn't get much better than this. Even the crap weather just made it more exciting. Did a few months in TPF, whinged like fcuk and got back on vass.

95 Fitters course Cosford.

96 Lyneham ALSS B shift on the Mighty C130K Hercules. Best posting. Trips away and a good bunch of guys.

99 Became a civvie. BAE Systems on the dreaded Nimrod

2002 Fairchild Dornier, Munich, Germany

2003 Airbus Bremen on the A400M, Germany

2004 EADS CASA Madrid, Spain

2007 Back in Blighty and I'm now doing some work for Flight Refuelling/Cobham.

Rather disappointingly since leaving 9 years ago not once has anyone set fire to me or even thrown me in a skip, and when people find out that it's my birthday they just congratulate me and sometimes even buy me a drink! No EWS, no bodge tape, nothing! These civvies are weird. Beware.

This should be easy...

1990 - Swinders. Halcyon days!!
1990-1992 - No 2 School of TT, Cosford (Joined as air radar techie, trained as avionics techie due to changes in trades which they didn't tell us about until we got there. 2 year course - boo!)
1992-1999 - SLF, Waddo (those that were there may know me as the tea bar loiterer (not the shroud of waddo though))

Left in 99, went into IT, now contracting in IT Security.

Joined up on the 1st of April '97 (Like that shouldn't have been an omen)
Joined up as a fairy so mechs course at Cosford then first posting to NLS @ Kinloss until Jan 2000.

Fitters course back at Tossford again, was on the first Fairy Course to get shafted by pay 2000, allegedly we made the papers with our march to PSF for PVR forms.

From there it was the mighty XV(R)se from july 2001 - Dec 2004

Back on the Kinloss-Lossie shuttle to NST in Jan 2005 - Jul 2006

I then got back on the shuttle to Lossie again to end up at 140 ARF via a very short stint on 12(B) Sqn, where I currently remain.

Hopefully looking for a move after the wedding next year (5 Sqn would be nice) although anywhere which isn't Lossie/Kinloss might be a good start :PDT_Xtremez_28:
