"What difference does this make", eh? What happened to "This charming man"? He says england is a memory now, but I ask "How soon is now?". Still, in Manchester, where he's from, "Every day is like Sunday"

I noticed his quote of :

" If you walk through Knightsbridge on any bland day of the week you won't hear an English accent."

An over exaggeration there Mr Morrissey. Did he take into account the thousands of tourists that flock to Knightsbridge every year to visit Harrods!.

I understand people are leaving Rome in droves because it's no longer very Italian. Dammit, even the Pope is German. Honestly, does he really think Rome is more English than London? Does his presence make Rome more or less Italian?

Welcome to the global village, pr1ck.

WTF???

His parents were immigrants FFS!! Maybe if we kept tighter control years ago, his parents wouldn't have got in and that would have saved us from his brand of pseudo-intellectual, self-pitying, middle-of-the-road pop.

I'm not sure what is more comedy gold about this article; that he is immigrant offspring, that people give a toss what the has-been says or the muppet who still thinks he is "cutting-edge pop star"!

Girlfriend in a Coma? Carreer in a nose-dive more like!

Morrissey is just expressing in words what the majority of the indigenous population can see with their own eyes.

In addition, if his remarks have attracted the wrath of the race relations Gestapo then, clearly, he is speaking the truth.:PDT_Xtremez_19:

This will cause Panic on the streets of London, but Frankly Mr Shankley you may as well meet me at the Cemetary Gates and see the Vicar in a Tutu because we all know that some girls are bigger than others.

Why is it that when anyone expresses a view on immigration, the media brings race into it?

It's the rate of flow of immigration that is the problem, not where they come from or the immigrants themselves.

We'd have the same problem if all the expats and their offspring all decided to come back at the same time.

We're an island race mate. We all traveled here from somewhere else in the distant past.

As for Morrissey, The we ignore him, the closer he'll get.

Feckin hell i may have to go see a shrink wise words STL. Mr Morr. has always courted controvesy and been linked to some race related media hype in the past. So lets drag it up again. Lets face it he's right many town centres now across the country are swamped with immigrants from all over the globe and not just touristy areas.

Haltons JRM seems to have been taken over by the Poles, but just because someone in the public eye expresses his concern then they get labelled. Yet dont most of these newspapers bang on about the problems of immigration and britain losing its identity. So its ok for them to say it but not someone in the music industry

Wait one minute guys, it's looking like Morrissey's words have been taken out of context!!

His lawyers say they will begin legal proceedings for defamation if a retraction is not published by 1300GMT.

Our island hasn't always been so though, has it?
No, but about 75% of us can trace their ancestry back to post Ice age immigration.

We have actively brought people to this country for hundreds of years some by the promise of work some by force.

Just a couple of generations ago we offered place's to people from India, Pakistan and surrounding areas to come here and to work in the Mills, hence why there is a large Asian community in places like Bradford which was the center of cotton production and the Asian's would work for less saving the company's a small fortune.

And go back 3-400 years ago we brought slaves here to work and to ship off to distant parts of the empire, again to exploit for cheep workers.

If we had done none of this the country would only now be experiencing immigration, rather than a continuation of it, and the ease of immigration is just another way that the government has employed to take advantage of people who want to come here to work on the cheap. So in the past 500 years very little has changed just the way we get them here.

so you could say that our national Identity includes the immigration of people, but to say that it is what has caused our country to loose its national identity is wrong, that is down to the Government and PC brigade who see praising our history and our achievements as wrong and offensive to others. Therefore diluting our sense of pride in this country.

Before anyone says it I am referring to Legal Immigration.

my opinion is this... when i start feeling like a minority in my own town then there is an immigration problem. others might not agree and they are more than entitled to but it doesn't stop me resenting the fact that in Boston I hear more Polish, Portugese and Latvian than I do bostonian. I will not apologise for my discomfort and neither do I think I am racist. I just feel that my local town is starting to lose its identity and become less English, more European. you decide whether or not that's a good thing. Personally I think not.:S

There are probably areas of Spain saying the exact same thing about Brits.

There are probably areas of Spain saying the exact same thing about Brits.

Go to the Grand Place in Brussels and almost the only language you hear spoken is English, in accents from Portuguese to Swedish. Brussels is still Belgian, though.

I think all this effort to define Britishness is counter-productive. I am Welsh and proud to be so. I tell my children that they are also Welsh despite the fact that one was born in Germany and the other in Hertfordshire. Yet ask me to define what makes me Welsh above all other considerations and I cannot answer. I just am, and the number of Asians and East-Europeans now living in the town where I grew up does nothing to change the way I feel.

doesn't change the way i feel about my britishness, but it does make me wander about the identity of my town. i agree with the comment about spain, but i'm talking from the viewpoint of someone who has seen a dramatic change in the last 5 or 6 years. you didn't hardly hear a foriegn accent in the 90's (rightly or wrongly) and now it is the exact opposite. boston is a very extreme case for those who do not know or have never been, the balance has very severely shifted towards immigrant majority. i'm being honest about the way it makes me feel to walk through my town.:PDT_Xtremez_21:

But back to Morrissey... They bloke's an absolute talent but he's got too much to say half the time. I can remember reading an interview of his around 1987 (also in NME I think) where he ranted on about his hate for Maggie Thatcher. He ended the interview by saying that for some years now he had owned a special uniform that he would like to wear whilst assasinating her. The nob went on to say he was just waiting for the phone call. WTF? Waiting for who to call him?
Keep off the drugs mate and get something to fill your time a bit.:PDT_Xtremez_15:

the initial thread was i believe started with reference to Morrisey's comments, not the man himself... anyway back on to the topic. the topic was raised on telly last night. my whole point of view is based not on the nationalities or where they live, but the number of immigrants since the 'open door' policy was introduced. the government no longer knows who lives here and how many of them there are. the country will swell. ::P:

As I said earlier and has be supported by FHLH, its nothing to do with where these people come from it is the numbers that are the issue and lack of coherent control. As said before its not just the tourist areas, since when has stoke been a holiday mecca for eastern europe:PDT_Xtremez_34:
