I'm being posted to 216 at the end of march and I was wondering where a good place to rent a house would be within a relatively good distance to the camp, but also within a good distance to a big town, Preferably within about 20 minutes from the camp.
Does anyone know of anywhere? i'm looking to spend less than 700 a month between me and a mate.

any suggestions?

P.s what is the shift patterns on 101 like??Off Topic

Two of my SAC's rent in the new build area of Carterton, thay are in flats at the cost of £600+, these flats are furnished.
Carterton is the ''Village'' that butts up to Brizes fence.

Witney, is the next town, a 10 minute drive from Brize but prices go up the closer you get to Oxford.

Oxford is a 20 minutes drive, traffic permitting' from Brize.

In the other direction, Swindon is a 30 minute drive, again depending on traffic.

Between there and Brize there are a few towns and villages, the cost of accomodation in them gets cheeper the further away from Oxford you get.

Towns to look at are Highworth, Faringdon and Lechlade

Hope that helps

Am I missing the point here?

Why would you want to spend approx £100 each per week to live off camp without at least trying leaving in first.

I've been there several times and even the civvies I was with opted to stay on base rather than go in a hotel.

Don't be put off by the recent bad press referring to AMQs, most of the SLA I saw wasn't bad at all and the food was really good.

There's good entertainment available both on and close to the camp and it's fairly easy to get into town. What more do you want?

At the end of the day it's your choice so good luck with the house hunting.

Have you ever been to Brize Norton?

The SLA is in general, very poor, with quite a long waiting list for a 'super block' The food is average, not 'really good' Entertainment on camp is the bop.

I also would personally live in before making the decision to move out, but that is his choice?

I think 101 work the same shifts as 216.

The shifts are pretty good, you get 2 weekends out of 4 off, basically: 2 days, 3 nights, 4 off, 3 days, 2 nights, 5 off, 2 days, 2 nights, 5 off.

You won't be loving it at the end of your third 12 hour night, 20 minutes till shift change, paperwork still to sort and crew in snags for missing reflective tape and other such vital technical issues coming through the door.

On the other hand, while it can be called busy, it cannot be called boring, so if you fancy a change, you should be ok.

With the close proximity to the Cotswolds, aren't the rents in the local towns and villages expensive? I remember in my tenure at BZZ, a lot of singlies were put off renting because of the costs, etc.

STL, I know what you are saying about living out but have you been to BZZ lately...?

The movements school pupils live in the Officers mess annex and if they get posted to BZZ off of the school they get to live in the re-opened Gateway, in fact all new postings to the camp do… Nice really.

Can’t wait till Lyneham get here!!!

Yes, if you compare prices with say, Yorkshire or the Midlands…

Carterton, White Goods only furnished two bedroom flat will hit you for £625 a month.

Highworth will be £550 for the same… Highworth is only 12 miles from Brize.

Witney will set you back £675, because as stated before, it’s closer to Oxford.

These are the prices 3 of the SAC’s on the Sqn are paying… The Carterrton flat is the newest and the Highworth flat the biggest.

Also just being finished in Highworth are some new flats by Barrett homes, they are being offered with an MOD discount.

As I'm at the moment working in Highworth, with locals, I would say that, yes it is cheaper compared to Toontown or Witney and has more pubs than Toontown (but then again, Riyadh has probably got better ones), but it also has a serious drugs & violence problem which is getting worse. I work at the largest employer in the town and we are regularly suffering visits from little w4nkers who think it's funny to break into cars etc whilst you're on a late shift then when confronted start hurling various objects at you knowing full well that the nearest Police are in Swindon. One of my mates has lived there all his life & has been burgled 3 times in 2 years.
Lechlade is very expensive, very unlikely you'll get somewhere to rent for a reasonable price, and if it rains a bit, you could have a bit of a problem.
Burford has a few rentable properties, but again price ranges are a bit more than you'll want to pay.
There is a large rental market in Swindon, but the properties aren't that great and there is a large (& growing) immigrant population taking up more & more properties.

You could look on www.rightmove.co.uk or the station intranet for brize and lyneham

Cheers for all the replies guys. I have been scouring the net for ideas and found that in the east side of Oxford (Headington) there are some properties for around the £700 mark, does anyone know if this is a decent area or are they going to exchange my car wheels for bricks? If it is ok then I think that may be the answer + it’s very near to oxford and I have heard the girls round there are v tidy.

Give me the street names that you are looking at, my missus works near there. So some of her work mates are in the surrounding area.

That would be great if you wouldnt mind the roads are "THE DALE, BAYSWATER FARM ROAD", "NORTHWAY", "Driftway Court, Meyseys Close" if your missus work mates know any numbers for letting agencies that would be great.
cheers

You might find that Headington is a bit far to travel, espically during rush hours. Whats worse though is having to drive home at the end of a 12 hour graft at 7am. if anywhere go more towrds Highworth, Lechlade or even fairford. You are going to be paying through the nose wherever you rent around here, but you need to think about commuting times as well. By the way 101 dont work the same shifts "as us on 216sqn" and they all live in our Shadow on the "DARK SIDE" with there static display Aircraft :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Swindon is ok, good night out, plenty to do and property is cheaper than Oxford. Highworth should be avoided if possible as someone earlier pointed out the nearest Police station is in Swindon and the law are generally busy in Swindon town centre. Swindon is also affordable if you wanted to buy.
