View Full Version : Possible Victimization of Poppy wearing pupil!!!!

Just found this on Arrse (http://www.arrse.co.uk/cpgn2/Forums/viewtopic/t=80975/postdays=0/postorder=asc/start=0.html).
Today at school a very anti-military teacher came up to me and demanded that I removed my poppy (I am the only person wearing one at the moment). When I refused she threatened me with an after-school detention and made up some cr*p about it not complying with school dress codes. I said that I would not go and so I had to face a bo11ocking by my head of year for answering back to a teacher or some-such rubbish.
Any ideas what I should do to the teacher in question? I know it is not against dress codes as people wear cancer ribbons etc all the time.
All (practical) suggestions will be attempted
A very sensible young man, however, the Army are awaiting a response from him regarding what action if any the school will take.
I trust the men and women of E-Goat will stand-by to "fight the good fight" if required?!

What an absolute joke. Unfortunately it doesn't surprise me in the least given the state this country has fallen into.
If this is true, I would go straight to the LEA for clarification!.
I've just read the entire thread over on ArRSe and have to say that young Mr Mazir comes across very well indeed and the support / advice he has got from posters has been really good. There are obviously a lot of people routing for him and I for one am hoping that he wins his battle.
well done that Man.

I agree.
Could we get the head teachers email address?
We might be able to offer our combined advice.
Dear Mr ******
I am writing to inform you of a personally distressing incident which occurred today (30/10/2007) during registration. I was wearing a Royal British Legion Poppy pinned to my school uniform to reflect my support of the charities that represent and care for those that have given our society the freedoms we have been privledged to have; unfortrunatley I was verablly attacked by Mrs ******* of the Maths department. Upon seeing the Poppy she demanded, “Take that off NOW.” (I have capitalised the ‘now’ as she said it with considerable force and slight aggression).
When I asked Mrs X for what reason I should remove my Poppy she replied that it was;
“Not the time”, “Offensive”, “Violating the school dress codes” and “Supporting violence.”
I thought it appropriate to highlight to Mrs ******* of the Royal British Legion’s campaign and referred her to the website (www.britishlegion.org) (http://www.britishlegion.org)). As such, I feel that it is appropriate that I was morally obliged to refuse to remove my Poppy.
As a result, I was threatened with an After-School detention if I did not comply her demand that I remove my Poppy. When I continued to refuse to remove my Poppy I was taken to see my Head of Year, Mrs ******, who wrote a note in my diary and told me off for talking back to a teacher.
I would like a clear response explaining why I am not allowed to wear a Poppy on the school premises and why I have been singled out for this attack when other pupils have been allowed their fundamental right to so their support of other charities such as Breast Cancer Awareness. Whilst ensuring that my support of the wearing of a Poppy was offensive I came across this quote (more here www.courtsni.gov.uk/NR...4542.htm): (http://www.courtsni.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/BF633B66-A619-41DE-B7B2-87825E31B688/0/j_j_WEAA4542.htm):)
“The policy represents an undue interference with my right to freedom of expression particularly my right to freedom of expression of political beliefs and cultural identity and the interference is not justified in that it serves to meet no pressing social need, is a disproportionate interference, is grounded upon reasons that are not relevant or sufficient and is founded upon generalisations not supported by evidence and the policy represents a violation of my rights under Article 10 of the European Convention of Human rights."
I have also taken the liberty to check the school code of conduct and cannot find a section relevant to my case.
I will continue to wear a Poppy every day unless sufficient evidence is produced to show me that it is inappropriate.
I remain,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Alex ******

Its good to see a young man stand up for his believes and not be intimitaed by a forces hating teacher. I commend him for his far supieror attitude to the situation and the letter that he wriiten to his head teacher showed how mature he is.

Absolutely Ridiculous!
Im in fact suprised to see that he was the only one wearing one though, as most schools run poppy campaigns.

LEA = Local Education Authority, Saves me typing!
Whilst based in Cyprus, a friend of mine was trying to chat up an attractive lady in a bar.
She responded to his advances by say something along the lines of ‘’sorry I don’t date child killers’’
My mate, a bit taken aback asked her where she had heard the we kill children, she replied ‘’the news papers’’.
My mate then asked her her profession, to which she replied ‘’teacher’’
My mate answered ‘’well that’s ok love, I don’t want to date a man hating lesbian child abuser, well that’s what the papers have to say about you lot…’’
I wonder if it’s the same woman??
Good response from the lad, lets hope the head has a brain

Well done that lad.
I cant see the headmaster saying no to him wearing a poppy, not just on moral grounds but also the sh1tstorm that it would bring to the school when the press found out.
It's good to see the young'uns standing up for the right to wear an item like this that means so much to so many.

Well spotted! I read it as "age 11" first time as well and was slightly creeped out by the thought of the junior Tefal head typing it up!
Still a very good and sensible response for a 16 year old though. Good work fella, you should be proud of yourself (and your parents should be proud too)!
He might want to run it through a spell checker before sending though.:PDT_Xtremez_06:
I'd give the lad a job tomorrow! More to the point though, what disciplinary action is being taken against the biased views and the teacher in question?
Ping
That lad handled it better than I would of, that is for certain! I probably would of given the head of year a good run for their money over the matter too, let alone the teacher. (Yes, when something really got me riled up like that would of if it happened to me, I would of made sure that they had my take on the matter whether they wanted to hear it or not.)

1. To get up on the right side of the bed
2. Not find sh1t in your cereal
3. More Caffeine

For those that don't want to trawl through the thread on ARRSE, here is an update from the subject school lad:
Ok sitrep on today. I am giving the Headmaster a 48 hour 'grace' period in which to reply. I think that this will give me the moral high ground and I can say that I was sympathising with his having to run a large Secondary School.
Although no direct response has occurred I talked to a mate's mum who works as a secretary in school. She said that around 10 this morning a load of teachers (including the Head, one of the deputy Heads and the teachers involved) had a meeting in the Headmaster's office.
She was asked to phone one of the school goveners and get him to come in to the school as soon as possible.
This afternoon I had maths and (as I said in the letter) the teacher who told me to take the Poppy off was a maths teacher. She saw me in the corridor, went slightly red, turned around and went into her classroom.
Seems to be going well
Again thanks for the support of you all (from all forums) as without it I probably wouldn't have written a letter.
I am currently organising a protest about this and a load of mates are going into town tonight and buying Poppies to wear.
As I was giving in the letter I saw something that made me smile. One of the groundskeeps was wearing a Poppy. I hope that the Head saw this.
In answer to some of the other questions, no the teachers don't (on the whole) wear Poppies. A few years back we had an assembaly on rememberance day dilivered (to my anger) by a teacher without a Poppy.
Regards all
Alex
The boy has done good me thinks. Our ARRSE collegues are giving him plenty of good advice particularly regarding his "protest". The general theme is to keep it low key and silent, ie pursued as many pupils as possilbel to buy and wear poppys.

Good luck Mazur.. I read the Arrse thread and there's some good advice in there.
Unfortunately, what happened to Mazur is an all to common attitude to the Forces.
I recall my own days in primary school (mid-fifties) and we were told to bring in a penny on a certain day because the poppy sellers were coming in. It was in the 'School Rules' that all teachers and pupils had to wear a poppy. How times have changed.
I hope that teacher gets an incurable dose of ring-sting.

Well done to the lad!
the teacher should take a look at herself.
I just hope she has no family/friends in the forces. Clearly not with that attitude.
There is nothing political about wearing a poppy I feel, yet some people try to mix politics with whom the poppy fund helps, tragic.
If she was a history teacher she may not have such a blinkered outlook ::P:
Off Topic I seem to be the only one wearing one up here. Oh well Off Topic

I was talking to a member of the family last night, who has just come back from Dublin, and was pleased to see so many wearing poppy's over there.
It's amazing how many folk do not realise the Royal British Legion have branches in the Republic.

Driving home from work yesterday trying to figure out what was digging into my chest and scratching me. Seatbelt was on top of the poppy pushing the pin into me yay. Who can I sue lol.
What did I do? Did I;
1. Take the poppy off and forget about it?
or
2. Leave the poppy on and ignore the pain?
Answer, option number 2 of course.
Brought another poppy this morning, because I had forgot to put my other one on my shirt. If I dont wear one, no one will see them round here and maybe it will make people think long enough to get one themselves.

It is the general concensous on ARRSE at the moment that this is a very elaborate wind up. Alot of "mildly" irritated squaddies now attempting to entice him to spill the beans and prove he is genuine!
It certainly didn't appear to me as a wind up, knowing what my school was like towards the end of my time there.

I think the original truth probably went along the lines of him being told to take it off for PE or something and he's blown it all out of proportion. Still, I think he meant his sentiments so we can't hold that against him
So is Mazur going to be man enough to give us the REAL version of events!
NB: No need, they are in the public domain now...
Ok I am going to be 100% honest here. As I said I have seen ARRSE bust numerous Walts so I would not make up a story like this.
Starting from the first post:
I was told to remove a Poppy by a teacher for the reasons I have put. The same about threatening me etc.
Next post:
She did say that I wasn't time yet. I did tell her that it was.
3rd:
The two teachers who are Ex-forces are true, Mr L*** (HAC) and Mr C***** (RE I think). I do know a school govener. I did google some pics but never stuck them up.
4th & 5th posts:
I did print off the letter and had it in my hand, but I didn't give it to the Headmaster. I told my form tutor who I belive passed it on. I did write it as well.
6th:
A mate's mum (Mrs C*****) does work as a Secretary in the school. She did not say at 10 but around mid-morning. The teacher going red is true. There was not however a govenor called (I said this as I felt people would not belive me if I said what really happened). But a meeting did take place.
Contrivertial post:
I as told by my form tutor that several options were available. I changed it to the head (who was actually wearing a Poppy) because (even though I had made an ultimatum) I didn't want to have to be haggled by ARRSE members demanding I phone the Sun or logging my IP and telling everyone where I live.
The options were from when I asked a teacher what could happen to another teacher who did a predjdiced action against a pupil. Same reasons apply for why I said it was the Headmaster.
I havn't told my mum or dad.
I have picked up army lingo from the sources I said.
Anything else you want confirmed.
