Some might argue that this has already happened ...

HG wells foresaw this hapening. In the Time Machine there are two humanoid species, The Eloi and The Warlocks.

The descendants of the genetic upper class would be tall, slim, healthy, attractive, intelligent, and creative and a far cry from the "underclass" humans who would have evolved into dim-witted, ugly, squaddie goblin-like creatures.
Sorry, couldn`t resist the edit ... Curly m8 if you read this I owe you a pint ... and don`t put it on Arrse :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Women, on the other hand, will develop lighter, smooth, hairless skin, large clear eyes, pert breasts, glossy hair, and even features,
Why does that have to be 1,000 years away????
Cryogenics, anyone?

Time to get in the garage and build myself a time machine:PDT_Xtremez_14:
I'll have to brush up on my chat-up lines though bcause the competition might be a bit fierce:
men will exhibit symmetrical facial features, look athletic, and have squarer jaws, deeper voices and bigger penises.
On a more serious note, I reckon he is way off the mark. Looking at the progress being made in gene research and manipulation, I don't believe that natural evolution is going to get a look in.
Humanity will fragment into different forms, but they are more likely to be built for purpose than evolved.

That all depends on when technolgical advances, or the prospect of, will carry more wight than ethics and morality. If the former were true now, I think our level of advancement in genetics would be far greater but at what price? When does it become acceptable to mess with the human genome, albeit for good causes in principle, to the extent that we have with lesser life forms?

It'll happen all right. People had reservations about messing with the atom but then along came the badguys and suddenly a quick resolution to the war seemed the better option.
Alternately (if there is no need to be faster/stronger/smarter to get the upper hand over other nations) it'll start with trying to eradicate health problems like asthma and birth defects and then, when it becomes common the big pharmaceutical companies will start to look for the profits.
Anyway, opinions evolve faster than organisms. Every generation will be slightly more accepting of the concept than the last until finally the dissenters will be viewed as crackpots. I mean look at the shift in "moral values" in the last 50 years.

I personally have no issue with it - if it means my kids kids will be able to live longer, healthier lives then crack on quacks - do what you will.
The only worry is, can humanity as a whole be relied upon not to bugger about with the genome to create super beings that will try to take over the world - somewhat akin to the Eugenics Wars referenced to in Star Trek?
Think about your reference to the atom TLS, the Nazis were well on the way to developing an a-bomb during the Second World War. Could a rouge state now be able to bugger about with the human genome? The only saving grace is that our "natural enemies" (not the french!) are now States which, shall we say have a slightly stricter religous outlook and so the prospects of them playing deiety are slim.

Exactly. And just think of the other benefits:
We could mess with plumber DNA and give them enough fingers to count past 10 but leave their boots on. You could give them thicker skin on their knuckles so that they don't get sore when they walk.
Riggers with an extra elbow that bends the other way and sticky fingertips (we've all needed them at some point).

Which will mean creating defects which require constant treatment thereby ensuring a steady stream of money into the company coffers.
By the way mate, you missed the bit where guys in the future will have bigger dicks, so don't bother with the time machine. You won't get laid there either !! :PDT_Xtremez_31: :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Actually, I didn't. Your eyesight is obviously on the blink from squinting at blurry web images of animal porn. Go and read post #6 again.
Ha, your snide comments cannot harm me, my self-effacing humour is like a shield of steel!

Of course the last great split was when we armourers moved from beating tin sheets into armour and moved in things that go bang thus elevating us into the first ever super class of superhumans known as armouria superious. About the same time French Isle of witigans and fat Welshman were breaking away to form the sub species of rigger degeneratus.
Women, on the other hand, will develop lighter, smooth, hairless skin, large clear eyes, pert breasts, glossy hair, and even features
So you will have to wait 100,000 years for pretty Waafies.:PDT_Xtremez_14:

If we are talking about a dimwitted, slow underclass its already happened.
We see them everywhere
Hanging out in gangs
Outside the spar
with their diamond white
their burberry
their fake gold chains
yes im talking about chavs
Do the world a favour, kill a chav.
If everyone killed just one chav, the world would be a better place tomorrow
However if you kill more than one the world could be a better place today
